Anal itching and pain

Help!

For approx 5 yrs now i have been experiencing severe anal itching. It used to only bother me at night but now it lasts most of the day too.  The skin around my anus has become pink from all the scratching and is always damp no matter how much i clean the area and if i use powder it only itches more. I have tried the steroid creams with only temporary relief and have tried worming medication just incase but no change.  Recently now during my period i have started to get very bad stabbing pain up my rectum and almost into my pelvis area when having a bowel movement http://www.medhelp.org/posts/new_with_new_subject?forum_id=95#which makes me feel like i cant pass it but i have to!  What can i do firstly about the itching, 5 years of hell and am too embarassed to see anyone about this and is this stabbing pain something i should be worried about?

Please help if you can.

Thats a very clear set of descriptions.
I was having the similar symptoms, but I noticed its also
more frequent when I am having stomach upset which my Doc
says cld be due to IBS.  Avoiding sugar in diet relieves me of these
symptoms.

Hi
Thanks for writing to the forum!
Itchy anus can be due to undigested food like citrus fruits, grapes, certain spices, tomatoes, certain medicines like antibiotics and laxatives and certain drinks like beer, milk, tea, or coffee. Anal fissures, hemorrhoids, threadworms and other worms can all cause anal itch. Itch can also be due to irritants like synthetic fiber, toiletries or fungal infection.

If you can identify any of these triggers, maybe it will help you. Along with this sense of incomplete evacuation of rectum, I feel it could be IBS (irritable bowel syndrome). Hence the itch is due to undigested food. However if it is not IBS, the stool in the lower rectum can cause itch.

Hope this helps. It is difficult to comment beyond this at this stage. Please do not be embarrassed. Nothing is more important than your health. Do consult your doctor or PCP to start with. Please let me know if there is any thing else and do keep me posted. Take care!
