Cause of High Pulse Rate???

I just got the results of my Nuclear Stress Test conducted chemically at the VA Hosp in Charleston, SC.

I was looking forward to maybe finding out why my pulse rate has always been so high, especially in the last few years.  The night before the test I measured 120 while rested and at rest using an automatic blood pressure checker.

I just got the letter with results and it is Greek to me.  It says my Nuclear Stress test was normal, Myocardial perfusion scan with no evidence of myocardial ischemia or infarction.  The left wall motion is normal.  The left ventricular ejection fraction is calculated to be 54%....  Two questions.  How does 54% rate for a man 70 years old with emphysema.

Also, I wad determined to try and find out why my pulse is so high and what can be done about it, if anything.

Furthermore, I secretly hoped maybe I needed a valve or stint or something that might be impairing blood flow.  If nothing is 'fixable' with my circulatory system I am stuck with it all being my  lungs which are less apt to ever get  any improvement.  aI am overweight mostly from having no energy or breath needed to exercise.  Just shopping without an electric cart is almost beyond reach.

I also have minor diabetes and using Meformin 500 mg, no shots, and do not take any type of meds with narcotics of any kind that would elevate my pulse.

Omprazole 20 MG EC Cap       twice a day
Etodolac 400 MG Tab two or three times a day
Potassium CL 20 MEQ SA Tab twice a day
Hydrochlorothiazide 25 MG Tab one in the morning
Benazepril HCL 40 MG Tab once in the evening
Metformin HCL 500 MG Tab 1/2 twice a day
Simvastatin USP 40 MG  Tablet 1/2 twice a day
Furosemide 40 MG Tab twice a day
Spiriva 18 MCG once in the evening
Testosterone CYP 200 MG/ML 1 ML VI in Oil       1 shot per month
Centrum Silver Multivitamin Supplement  (my idea) 1 a day

Thanks

The amount of oxygen used at night by plants is trivial. Actually plants use a teeny bit of oxygen 24/7, but in the daytime put out far more than they use. There is no need to remove them from the room.

Oxygen tanks are not the flavor of the month these days. Instead, the trend is toward what are called "oxygen concentrators". These operate electrically and are less expensive and less hazardous. In the United States they require a "certificate of necessity". The VA will normally provide one if requested.

Good advice from everyone. Thanks.

The breathing treatments and the rescue inhaler don't seem to do much good for me.

But the main concern I had was the high pulse rate.  I have always had a high pulse rate and all doctors have avoided discussing it with me even after I ask about it.  I figured they just didn't know.... and I still don't.

Breathing is difficult with or without plants for people who have a lung disease like emphysema.  Unfortunately there is no cure for emphysema, only inhalers and oxygen to make things more comfortable.

Although plants produce oxygen in day light hours, once it gets dark, plants take in oxygen and put out carbon dioxide.

Broad leafed plants and Chlorophytum (also known as spider plant) are best to purify the air but would need to be removed from the room at night time.

To help people with mild to moderate emphysema as regards their independence to go out and do their own shopping use of a small oxygen tank is ideal.  They are very discreet too.  Without this, my uncle who also had COPD would not have been able to have gone outside on his motorised wheelchair on his own.

As you are not able to exercise to lose weight, eating less calories than your body needs will also help you to lose weight.  Talk to your doctor as regards a healthy diet plan designed specifically to your needs.  Just simple changes to your diet may help, like cutting out sugar, and processed foods and simple carbs, like cakes, biscuits, eating brown bread instead of white and so on as well as cutting down on portion sizes.

Before resorting to oxygen bottles keep the room well-ventilated and purchase a few plants in every room. The plants produce oxygen. Normal room air is 21% oxygen, but in a closed room re-breathing can drop this to 18%. Plants with a partially open window cab bring the 02 content to 23% quite easily.

There are portable oxygen bottles that are harnessed to your body with a tube that lead into your nose.  This may help you with your breathing problem when you go out in your electric chair to do your shopping.

Talk to your doctor about this.

I would interpret the results as meaning that there is no problem with your heart.

As you have  emphysema which is a lung disorder (as you will already know), the heart is having to work harder to pump the blood round to get oxygen to different parts of the body and that would result in a higher pulse rate.

As you are on statins, you must have been prescribed these because of high cholesterol levels that have caused a build up of plaques narrowing your veins.

Unfortunately, there is no cure for  emphysema.  Your doctor may have already informed you of this and if you smoke to quit smoking and to have bronchodilators and or oxygen.  The other option is a lung transplant which is not always possible due to availability, condition of the patient etc.

Best wishes.

I have a high heart rate but after several tests it came to find out that I have mitral valve prolapse ...something that is hard for doctors to find apparently. I have an excellent cardiologist that figured it out pretty quickly. Me sitting and having not activity my heart rate would be 170. I am 31 years old and now on bystolic for the rest of my life. It has helped has far as being tired all of the time, etc. I hope that nothing else has to be done in my future meaning that it dont get worse.
Hope you figure out what it is.
