Flagyl side effects, permanent? Anyone else?

I just had a thought this evening that most of the problems I have had have occured after taking Flagyl (Metronidazole).

I am showing symptoms that are confusing my Drs and have been for about 4 years.  When I look back on when I began feeling poorly it seemed to happen after taking Flagyl.  Because I never got a rash or anything whilst on it I didn't think I was allergic but the side effects and after effects I've had seem to be quite bad.

In 2005 I got mumps, but it was on only one side, so I assumed that because I had a wisdom tooth that liked to play up that it might be that so I saw the dentist who put me on Flagyl 500mg a day.  I got worse but put it down to the fact that it was because it was mumps and not a tooth infection.  After the mumps went I developed fatigue, pins and needles in arms and legs, vision problems, vertigo, muscle spasms and pains.  I saw the Dr who told me my white cells were a little low but nothing to worry about, she also suggested I might have M.E./Chronic Fatigue/Post Viral Syndrome.  I was signed off work for 8 weeks to rest, but the symptoms continued for months.

In 2006 I was pregnant and had about 4 different occasions where I had a wisdom tooth infection and was given Flagyl 250mg a day for each occasion.  I noticed by the 4th occasion that I was starting to feel a little knocked for six and wondered if it was doing me some damage then, but I put it down to pregnancy.  After the birth, about 8 weeks post partum I got another wisdom tooth infection and was given a stronger dose of Flagyl (500mg a day).  This time it seemed that I was completely knocked for six.  I was off balance/dizzy, I got hot flushes, vision troubles, lost my appetite, had tingling arms and hands, aches, all sorts of wierd stuff.  I finished the course and for a good couple of weeks after I felt weak and tired, I got really pale and I started losing a lot of weight for no reason.

I then, a couple of months later developed other symptoms: unequal pupils, throat problems, furry tongue, mouth sores, sweats, elevated blood pressure, elevated heart rate, dizziness again, I was also very pale.  I had bloods done and the Dr's said they were normal.  I underwent blood tests for a number of months to monitor this and apparently even my thyroids showed up normal (which was what the Dr kept suspecting where the problem was).

It took months for me to get back to almost normal but I still got the symptoms but was given meds to control them.

I then fell pregnant again last year and after the birth developed a uterine infection, was given Flagyl this time 1000mg  a day.  I felt horrible!  I was dizzy, getting tingles, sweats, shivers, you name it.  After that I experienced tiredness, weakness, anxiety, sleepiness, vision problems.  I then got another infection down below and was given Flagyl again, took the course and felt horrible again.  I had blood tests for the fatigue etc and was told I was anemic.

I then became poorly about 7 weeks ago and went to the Dr's, I had blood tests done again.  My anemia was being monitored over the months and for six months, or should I say, since the Flagyl I've had neutropenia which has gradually been reversing but I am still neutronpenic.  I asked my Dr to look into my history and she confirmed that I was also neutropenic 4 years ago after having my son, those tests were done just after being on Flagyl.

Is it Flagyl that is making me sick long term maybe?  I just wondered.  I've been looking for answers for 4 yrs now.

Anyone else experienced problems after Flagyl?  My new Dr has suggested I have an autoimmune problem but could all of this be caused by Flagyl?

okay so i skipped a few of your posts--they think i have low grade lymphnoma which also fits everything you mentioned--never knew there was such a thing it should really be named chronic cancer cause it gets real bad than not as bad--it waxes and wanes--by the time i went to get the biopsy done my lymphnodes had went down to what i percieve as normal not normal for a regular person--acts alot like mono or ebv when its active--all they do is watch your lymphnodes they only do  treatment unless they become so big that it affects something like your breathing or swallowing for an extended period of time.the only good reason to actually get a bioposy done would be able to start antibotics earlier for an infection or for a name to this big mess--

I have had or have most of your same problems from looking at other posts--except for the pregancys--still no name for the autoimmune disease--are you on depo or another progestrone based birth control when your not pregant?? heres a few problems you have that ive figured out from visiting the drs sone of it i had forgotton about cause if am not sick am not treating it i feel better i stop--yeah they say chronic fatgiue/fobromylagia-- i feel like they just tell people that that dont tell you what you can do about it theres a book from fatguie to fantanstic-- i can never afford to do the whole program when i try to help myself...so heres son stuff ive learned that might be helpful--
-the lack of vit b2-b6- folic acid play a role with sinus tachy - they say anxiety cause most people go into sinus tachy due to anxiety  not me mines a vitiam or a valve problem that they ignore--so since your having other lacking nutrients I would think this is helping create your problem--as for the flagyl it probaly messed with your stomach balance with a vit problem it snowballs--it would appear after an infection  or virus even more so or maybe it affects the immune system am not sure why maybe  its since our bodies use these nutrients use the b vits for stress, infection ,and they are used up during pregancy  they used to always stress these for prenatal vit. when you are showing sinus tachy youve been defincient for a long time so its takes a while for your levels to get back up-- i always think they are suppossed to work like magic thats not the case--i almost had a heart cath done they refused and gave me special prescription vits claiming i had an infection with an anemia --infection was finally found--i didnt stay on the special prescription blaming the infection for causing the lack of vits--plus the phamacy claimed the over the counter ones are the same --there not-- you have to get the b vits where they are already broken down as some people systems dont break them down well enough--I never knew lacking vits would do so much you could be lacking a diff. types of vits but by the time they figure out that your pretty drained--possatium also causes you to heart flutters sometimes --I never knew a vit deficiency would cause heart problems--
you say you keep getting infectons down there have you gotten you husband/boyfriend treated--clamidia causes alot of these symptoms but so due other bacterial infections like bacterial vaginosis--it seems like you keep on reinfecting yourself i-- they dont give these enough credit for feeling crappy--no matter what infection it is-are confusing i with a yeast infection making it worst i say this because your fuzzy tongue you had at one point screams yeast infection--which causes extreme fatigue (they have a kit made by vagisil that runs about 20 dollars to tell you which way to go on the medicine to let you know whether to do a anitbotic or a yeast treatment for down there-)for the sore fuzzy tongue yes the antibotics caused it--its yeast aka thrush- aka candinia-they have a script called diflucan sometimes it take more then one treatment ask your doctor for it--yogurt with probotics will sooth the toungue and get it out of your digestive system  am sure youve seen the activa commercial--or just probotic themselves they are like the vits though all brands are not created equal-- with fixing yeast problems they take time---they have different names for yeast for differnt areas of the body-read up on it--they killed the infection but you didnt replace the bad bacteria with good bacteria they didntt  tell you to so why would you have ever considered it--the amount of  of antibotics seems to be alot and would definitly mess up the so called balance we are supposed to have--so is flagyl bad-- no it killed what you wanted it to-- but it also took your good bateria it cant tell them apart.
