Damage to Ureter from Surgery

Can you tell me how common it is for patients to experience ureter damage (cut or sutured) during a gynecological procedure?

Recently, I had a fibroid tumor removed and my physician inadvertently stitched my ureter.

I actually had ab OB procedure three months ago to remove fibroids and had my right ureter burned in half and my left ureter stitched.  The right one was fixed during the surgery and the left one went un-noticed.  Three weeks later, I went to the Urologist who fixed my right ureter only to find the stitching in the left one.  Had nephrostomy tubes inserted into each kidney and have been living a nightmare since.  Unfortunately, ureteral damage is very common in OB procedures.
