Penile Yeast Infection

Hello Doctor,

I have been dealing with this penile yeast infection for a few months now.  There is no discomfort and the only symptoms are some discoloration on the head of my penis and raised skin around my pee hole.  There was, however, some discomfort in the beginning.  As for treatment, I was given a single dose of Fluconazole which didn't work.  Two weeks later, I was given another dose.  No help.  One month later I was given seven doses to take seven straight days and that didn't work.  Tomorrow I will begin another seven days worth of doses.  My doctor told me that I could not pass it on to my wife but her OBGYN informed her at her appointment yesterday that she had a yeast infection.  I'd read several places online that it can be passed back and forth but this contradicts my doctor.  My two questions are these:  1.) In your opinion, can this yeast infection be passed back and forth between my wife and I?  2.) Besides taking this medicine, what else can I do to combat this?  Just to be thorough, here are some of my regular practices:  I work for a liquor company so I enjoy a cocktail or two every evening, I enjoy my Copenhagen, I take Ranitadine daily for reflux and heart burn, my diet is rather indulgent, I am taking Celebrex for another matter and I am a bit out of shape.  Not fat but I haven't been on a regular workout program in years.  As always, your time and knowledge is very appreciated.  Also, any of you gents out there that have experienced this, please lend a hand to a poor fellow exhausted with this.

Bill

That does help.  Thank you.  My wife saw here gynecologist and I saw my urologist.  She was given two doses of Fluconazole to take three days apart from each other and I was given the seven doses of the same to take over seven days.  Would this be adequate treatment in your eyes?  And, I have some lotrimin.  Would this be a good thing to use topically?  When should I expect symptoms to go away?  Lastly, how long should we refrain from sex?  Sorry for the blast of questions

Hello,
Yes it is true that fungal yeast infection can pass on back and forth. So both of you need to get the treatment which basically consists of topical and oral antifungals. Various reasons for recurrent or persistent fungal infection are incomplete treatment, treatment resistance, co-existing dermatitis, diabetes and low immunity. Treatment resistance can be overcome by applying a cream with a combination of antifungals (Clotrimazole 1%, Miconazole nitrate 2%, Tolnaftate 1% and Butenafine hydrochloride 1%).

You and your wife should get an examination done from a gynecologist.
I hope it helps. Take care and regards.
