Retention after procedure

by snippet25, Feb 08, 2009 02:07PM
I experienced urinary retention after removing the catheter the day follow HoLAP. The procedure, necessitated by ongoing  BPH symptoms,  went smoothly, and I was back home that same day. After enduring 8 hours of retention, a catheter was reinserted with cathetrization to be continued for another 6 to 7 days. There was no indication of infection, although I don't know if a urine culture was even taken. But, I am taking Cipro 500MG twice daily. The urologist did comment that my retention was somewhat rare. Ofcourse, I'm apprehensive about retention reoccurrence when the catheter is removed again. I did also experience retention after a cystoscopy a few weeks prior to the HoLAP that ultimately required a visit to ER and a catheter. I'm thinking that maybe I tend to be more reactive to any type of bladder and urinary tract trauma experience than normal.  Is there anyone with any similar experience ? - or, any advice on my situation, or even a conclusion to such an experience ?

Hi,
How are you? It could be over sensitivity to the material of the catheter, due to which you are experiencing recurrent urinary retention symptoms after catheterization. Is resection of prostrate successful at the neck of bladder? As, this is a common issue with retention. Use of alpha blockers can help in this situation.
Also, if it is just over sensitivity, then practicing intermittent catheterization with a rubber catheter could help return to normal.

I removed the catheter today after 5 days of continuous catheterization. After some difficulty, I was able to overcome the initial post operative total urinary retension condition with partial voiding of the bladder, but hopefully, I'll see progressive improvement. Cosidering some of the possible factors that might contribute to my problem - baldder trauma, related nervous system distress, and general pain and anxiety - i'm somewhate relieved with even partial improvement. Thanks for your response.
