the stone is 7mm and its in the left uterer tube and they believe is keeping the left kidney from draining fluid to the bladder.i had and i.v.p test where they used some type of dye to get a better look at the stone and they determined that the left kidney was not functioning correctly.they believe the stone is he cause. What i dont understand is why use a stent instead of removing the stone??

Hi

Management of the ureteric stones depends upon the location, size and the type of the stone. Usually small stones can be managed by periodic observation and may not require operative intervention. In patients who have, or might have, an obstruction (blockage) of the kidney, an internal drainage tube called a ‘stent’ is commonly placed in the ureter, between the kidney and the bladder. This is placed there in order to temporarily relieve the obstruction and wait for the stone to pass spontaneously. The stent can be removed at a later date.

It would be helpful if you could write in with the details of the stone (size, type and location).

What does your doctor say about the management of your stone?

Take care,
Regards
