prominent veins and dull ache in penis after prolonged natural erection

Hi,

For two nights in a row last week I had prolonged erections that lasted all night (probably about 6 hrs each night).  These erections were natural (no drugs) and I did not ejaculate either night.  The erections were due to natural causes, so to speak, though no sexual activity occurred.  After the second night I woke up and noticed two prominent thickened veins on the top of my penis whereas before there were no prominent veins.  One is bluish/purplish, thin and branched, and the other is thicker and straight and you can't see it's color.  They are both visible when the penis is flaccid, but only the purple one is really visible when the penis is erect.

I also have a dull ache in my penis that is pretty constant.  It has now been 4 days since I've started having these symptoms.  I can have erections and ejaculations and all, but everything feels a bit weird down there.  The veins and the dull ache have not diminished in the 4 days.  I also have been having to pee a lot more frequently.

Could I have damaged my penis?  Should I seek treatment?  Should I take ibuprofen or aspirin or anything?  Should I 'rest' my penis and not engage in any kind of sexual activity until these symptoms abate?  Will these veins go away?

Thanks for any info you can give me.

If this upsets your stomach, you could try plain aspirin, two every four hours, though you may have the same problem. The medicine is for inflamation. I would not bother with this if you are getting better on your own.

Thank you for your advice Dr. Liroff.

Is the ibuprofen just for pain relief, or is it also to help aid in healing?  Sometimes my stomach is sensitive to ibuprofen.  If I have trouble, what else should I take?

Thanks again.

Prolonged erections can damage the penis and affect future erections. Usually 4-6 hours is considered “prolonged.” You are probably aware of the warnings that you hear on the ads for Viagra and similar drugs. You should avoid sexual stimulation until the discomfort fully resolves. Taking ibuprofen 400-600 mg. by mouth, 4 times per day (every 6 hours) if you do not have ulcers, kidney problems or any contraindication and can tolerate the drug if a reasonable plan. Take this for a week or so.
I do not think the vascular prominence is significant, only the aching.

I just remembered, on the morning when I first noticed my symptoms I also had a bowel movement that I had to strain quite a bit for (I'm having constipation issues) and I can't remember if that was before or after I noticed the symptoms with my penis.  I doubt the straining could be a cause, but I thought I'd mention it just in case.

Another thing, the past couple of evenings I've been feeling a little nauseous and I think that it may be related to the pain in my penis.  I feel better if I lie down for awhile.

As an addendum to my question, I should have called them blood vessels rather than veins because I don't know if they are veins or arteries.  Also, there are actually more than two that are newly prominent, as there are several more on the underside and side of the penis that are bulging out that were never like that before.   Thanks again.
