Healthy start to weight loss?

Hi, I'm a 24 year old female.  I have a relatively mid-level for stress in my life.  You know the story - Student loans to pay off, bills to pay, not enough money etc etc...

I'm 5'10 with a medium/large frame.  I weight 221 pounds and am working on getting down to at least 175 by my wedding in 2 years.   I know that's mid range for my healthy weight.

I've been doing the calorie count diet for the past 2 months.  I hit a max of 234 pounds and am down to about 221 (undressed) 222 (dressed) I think I'm doing pretty good.  I aim for about 1300 calories a day, I try to exercise by walking 30/45 minutes 3 to 4 times a week.   This week has been rough for me because works been a drag and I've been sick.  But I just want to know if i'm on the right track - if i'm aiming for the right calories in a day...

My biggest problem was I didn't eat ENOUGH in a day.
When I actually counted up the calories I ate in a day before I started my diet it was in the range of about 800/900, including my working for 8 hours and then doing cleaning and shopping at home.  I know I wasn't eating enough or healthy.  I never ate "BAD" persay, just became lazy.

My new/old diet is how I ate when I Was little.
Carrots, Celery, corn broccoli... a bagel or two here or there.  No fatty foods (when I can avoid it - the occasion burger - no cheese and french fries once a month or so when I feel I've been good I will do...)

I eat salads often, I try to eat a decent amount of meat for protein, mainly in form of steak fajitas and grilled porkchops, grilled chicken and rice, shrimp on the grill...

I drink apple juice, water, orange juice....
Sometimes I'll have a 90 calorie yogurt smoothy during the day, plus one of the 150 calorie cups of chunky chicken noodle soup.   (for while I'm at work)   I've also taken to making my own 100 calorie packs of stuff.  Like a bought cereal and I made up 100 calorie packs in sandwhich bags, 100 calorie packs of my favorite snack foods....

I've been eating some vanilla ice cream, a little bit of chocolate and a banana for dessert once or twice a week, plus the occasional bowl of cereal if I can wake up in time for breakfast before work.

I know I still have a long ways to go, but I'm wondering if i'm doing it right?
Am I aiming too high for calories? Should I be lower? Should I be higher?!

I just want to get back to my desired weight and be healthier!
I've noticed a difference and have dropped almost 2 pant sizes! I'm proud of myself but... is there anything else I could be doing to do it better?

ummmm. well. I just read your dilemma and i'd like to commend you on your recent weight loss.

However, I learned that water, although it's been said for the who knows how much for a long time, is still the best weapon during a weight loss program. I found out (while doing my research on the net and watching shows about fitness, etc.) that increasing the amount of water you take in actually increases your metabolism. And, as we all know.... High metabolic activity means that you can burn higher calories. The only thing to worry about that is acquiring water weight. Nevertheless, water weight can easily be shed off by a few visit to the sauna or just preferring not to use the air conditioner while driving to work....

Another thing that I try when I'm in my dieting phases is the 10 minute rule... My 10 minute rule simply means that whenever I crave something really badly, I count up until 10 minutes (you can modify the range of time) and then see if my cravings are gone. Of course, you have to keep yourself busy and lead your mind to a different direction during the wait.

owwww. I think I saw a show that included bagels as one of the common dieting mistakes of people.

P.S. I hope this helps. I'm not an expert but I still hope the best for your weight loss! :)

I guess I should point out i'm basing my 1300 calorie intake by research I've done online.  However, most of them never balance up..

Some sites saying 1800, some say 2425... some say 1200...
I figured I'd shoot for 1300 and work my way up a little. *sighs* why is it always so complicated?
