Abnormal bleeding

My period lasts around 4 0r 5 days then goes away. Around 5 days later I start to bleed again which can last for anything up to 5-10 days. In the morning the blood is a red colour but by the evening it turns to a brownish colour. I have went to the doctors last year and had some tests done but they could not find anything. They suggested I go back on the pill on which I declined. Should I go back??
