Are only three to four periods a year healthy?

Hello:
I am 27-year-old female. I have hypothyroidism that is being treated with .115 levothyroxine. I am on atenolol 25 once daily to suppress PVCs. I am on no other medications at this time. I am about 25 pounds overweight. I have polycystic ovarian disease and do have several cysts on my ovaries. I  often have high liver enzymes and had a liver biopsy that was normal. I have never smoked or drank. I have a history of one blood clot in the upper thigh area.
I was always kept on birthcontrol pills to regulate my periods since I was 11 years old. When I got the clot last Oct. they took me off the pill. I have not had a period since then until this week. I have heard that it is okay to only have three to four periods a year. I just want to confirm that this is okay and healthy and does not raise my risk of cancer. I am not concerned about fertility issues at this point. I also wanted to know if 27 is considered a safe age to have a hysterectomy? Thanks for your time,
Alisa W.

Thanks for your thoughts on this. I was going to use the pills that you take for a week to have a period but my gyn said that with my history of that one blood clot that I should not use that either. I guess that all those medications, like the pill, will increase my chance of clotting.  They did run all the blood work and I don't have any reason to have gotten the clot. It is a bit of a mystery. Sure is throwing a kink into my female health though.

I am in my early 30s - have been on the same bc pills (lowest estrogen) for over 10 years.  I started not getting my period for the past 3 yrs.  My doctor (went to more than one gyn) said it was normal and not to worry about it.  However, being that I always got my period on the 'green' pills - I was worried - where does all that stuff go if I dont get my period each month.  I did not have any other medical problems like the ones you guyes stated.  I would get a second opinion.  I have since started a new bc (high estrogen) and am getting painful cramps during my period (which are light) - go figure?  Good luck!

hi there well i am like you with a thyroid disease and my doctor told me as long as i was getting my period every three months it was ok however i would be concerned cause of your prevous history with cycts and all. but i know if you dont get your period every three months my doctor gave me these pills that i would take for ten days to bring my period on. so you might think about checking it out with your doctor. good luck with this all
