Dental surgery whilst in early pregnancy

I am due to have a plate implanted into my gum in less than 2 weeks, after losing my 5 front teeth in a car accident 6 years ago.  I have had the bone graft to make sure that there is enough bone to attach it too and have to have the surgery before the bone settles away too much.  My problem is that I think I that I am pregnant, my period is a week late and I am due to go to the dr for a test in 3 days.  Is it still safe to go for the surgery? they had planned to do it in a day visit and under local anasethic and sedation - Not general.  I don't suppose I would have to be sedated, it was more for my own comfort and probably to make it slightly easier for them.
I am in a real dilema because its taken a long time to get this far with the surgery and I have already had the bone graft and now I am scared if I phone my dentist when I get the results of the pregnancy tests, they will tell me they can't do it!!  I hope someone out there has the answers for me!

gee, you are in a spot huh? i can see your dilemma. you've waited so long for the repair..BUT....you are right about them possibly not performing the surgery if you are pregnant. when i go to the dentist, they will ask me at times (like before xrays or nitrous oxide?..) if i am/may be pregnant. my guess is they wouldnt want to perform this procedure even under local sedation.

PLEASE either find out for sure if you are pregnant or not. why dont you take an hpt now? see what it says (even though you have a dr. appt in a few days). then, when you go for your dr. appt. he/she can at least confirm it for you. if you are a week late the hpt should show an accurate result. then, at your dr. appt. let them know everything you just said here in your post so he/she can make a recomendation as to whether or not this surgery is safe (if pregnant). if negative, its a definite go!

i am not 100% on this since i am not a dr. of dentistry or medical dr. just one who thinks they will not do it under the circumstances. just be sure you do ask if its ok to have it done. dont not say anything since you could put the unborn baby in danger/risk.
keep checking your post though, someone else may know more. good luck and go to the drug store to get a pregnancy test!!
keep us posted okeedokee?

on the other side I had local anastetic for a infected wisdom tooth and they had to take a xray also!..I was in my second trimester though! MAKE sure they know your pregnant..
My baby was perfectly fine! I think a local is okay but the only thing i would worry is your in your first trimester..ASK

I think they may be able to do the surgery. If they do though they will more than likely wait until the second trimester.

I have never had major dental work done while pregnant, just the general cleanings and such.  However, I did have to have a biopsy done while pregnant with my son, and they waited until the second trimester to do it.

Good luck,

Amanda

The other posts are on the right track. Dental work can be performed during pregnancy, but most dentists wait until after the 1st trimester. My OB info sheet for this pregnancy told me that dental work was ok. My dentist said problems that can wait should be put off, but that is something was pressing for time they could do. Definately take a HPT, you're late enough to get an accurate result. After that call your dentist. They can most likely wait 9 more weeks and then get you taken care of.

First find out if you are pregnant. If you are, call your dentist and let him know. There may be ways he can get around it. There are lots of sedatives that are safe to use during pregnancy provided they are used correctly. But your situation may warrant waiting a couple months until babe is in the clear zone. Your dentist (hopefully) should be able to tell you what your options are. If you are still unsure, ask your doctor.
