Can i still be pregnant even though test negative

I am 8 days late for my period so decided to take a home pregnancy test today which turned out negative.  Is there still a chance i could be pregnant.  How accurate are these test? Has anyone else been in a similar situation and found that they were in fact pregnant even though test negative?

haha, i didn't read all of these but read quite a few, and three years later after the posted question, i'm in the same sit. as ya'll!  haha.

period always has been pretty regular, but now i am 13 days late.
if i were pregnant, this would be my first child.
my husband and i have only been trying for a month.

i had all the symptoms and proof of implantation bleeding about a week and a half before my period was supposed to start; that surprised me, since i thought that it was my period starting at first, though it looked different.
i have some symptoms now, since about a week before my missed period, but they come and go - is that normal?
sore, tender breasts, nausea, cramping, headaches.  i don't know if they're pregnancy symptoms, or if it's mental.  lol
took a test in the evening, not in the morning when it is recommended, five days ago, so when i was about eight days late, and it came back negative.  though it was faint.

i will take another test probably after nov. 6th, when my period should be starting.  if i don't start then either, i will have missed 2 periods, then i will take the second test.  if it still doesn't start a week after my second missed period, should i go in for a blood test?  ergghhh.

this stuff is so confusing.
