Can this possibly be true? Help ladies!!!

Okay, long story short, my grandfather has cancer and has had radiation seeds implanted in his body. He is currently in the hospital and I want to go visit him really bad. My mom called and said that if I go see him, I can't get close to him because the radiation could cause my reproduction organs damage and I could possibly not ever get pregnant. Also, she said the same thing to my sister (my sis is pregnant) and said it could harm the baby. Is this true? I think it's something my aunt just made up and told my mom.....

P.S. If it is true, my uncle has not had kids yet, and he's in room with my grandpa...could it ruin HIS reproduction organs?

Thanks ladies for the advice...I was able to see him last night! My sister didn't go, mainly because hospitals are too filled with germs and she just shouldn't be there anyway unless she has to!

He is doing a little better and hopefully he'll be home within the next day or so! Thanks again!

Only if you're actually pregnant; it does not affect future fertility or anything else. This is a really common procedure, btw. My dad had them implanted for prostate cancer, and several friends have had them for other cancers. There were no restrictions on anyone except small children and pregnant women, and that was only very temporary.

Definitely call the hospital, especially for you since you're not currently pregnant. I believe they have a type of smock, similar to those worn during x-rays, that would offer some protection. I'm sure they have people treating him too, so I have a hard time believing that it's that dangerous.

Good luck with everything, & I hope he's Ok. I really hope you can get there, but if not I'm sure he'd understand.

I found this:
http://www.mayoclinic.org/permanent-prostate-brachytherapy/faq.html

While your sister may not want to actually hug him, I think a visit is more than safe.  The nurses that check on him should be able to readily tell you this info too once you get to the hospital.

I'm sorry he's sick, honey.
