Chronic vaginal irritation

I have had external vaginal irritation for a couple of years now. I was tested for infections and do not have any.  My OB/GYN suggested I start using a douche to clear out any excess discharge.  He said since I'm 36, sometimes we produce more dishcharge as we age and maybe that is causing the irritation.  He also suggested "freezing" my cervix but that sounds scary to me!  He sent me away with Nystatin and Triamcinolone cream, which is how I survive the irritation.  Every few days I need to use the cream which provides relief, but the irritation always comes back!  I am not using anything different as far as detergent or soap so I don't know what to do.  Please help!

Thank you for your input.  It seems you are referring to itching alot, which I do not have.  I am basically just sore all the time around the vaginal opening and the soreness can spread up the edges of the labia if I don't use the cream I noted.  I wondered if maybe I should see a dermatologist but that seems like an embarrassing topic for that kind of doctor.  I don't believe STD's are a factor as I have been happily married for 17 years.  I am soooo tired of being sore and it is depressing to think I may never figure out why.

Thank you again and if you think of anything else, please let me know.

I know that vaginal itching is an uncomfortable condition that has many causes. While this condition can indicate only minor irritation or easily treated conditions, it can also be a symptom of more serious gynecologic conditions, such as sexually transmitted diseases.
Although you said you have done some test and nothing abnormal was detected.

However there are many things that can cause this irritation such as :

-Menopause-can lead to vaginal itching or irritation. Can be treated with estrogen creams or pills.
-chemical irritants
-Yeast infection

-Skin disorders: that affect the vulva can result in vaginal itching
Ageing, lichen sclerosis is the most common type of vulvar skin condition. The condition causes shiny patches of parchment-like skin to develop on or around the labia. Some women have no symptoms, this condition can cause intense itching.

I would suggest think about having these test done: colposcopy, Bacterial culture, pap-smear

Best Regards
