Early Pregnancy Concerns HELP!!!

I just found out last week I was pregnant on Thursday which was 4 days before my period was due. I went to to the doctor's to confirm which they did and sayed my HCG was 58. I went home on Friday night and had intercourse with my husband. After which I started to lightly bleed which stopped Saturday morning very early. There was no more bleeding until Monday morning and I woke up with cramps which were not severe but similar to what you would get on a period. All day Monday and Tuesday bled but only when going to the bathroom. My pad had maybe one or two drops all day and night was completely empty. The bleeding turned even lighter Wed to Today.
Since I started bleeding Monday I went to the doctor again on Tuesday and they said my levels were 438.
Why did I bleed is it normal? Does this rise mean the baby is okay since I got the test after the worst was over?
The bleeding only was heavy when I would urinate or wipe in which it was bloody mucus. very stretchy.
i must also mention i started my birth control after being off for a month, 3 weeks before i found out i was pregnant i stopped immediately on thursday with 2 pills left.

I've only been pregnant once and it ended in a m/c.  But, I was told it is normal to bleed during pregnancy.  You should watch for heavy bleeding and bad cramps.  Your numbers are supposed to double every 48 hours.  So, depending on when you had your numbers tested, the rise is a good sign.  If the doctor didn't raise any concerns with the bleeding then I would try to worry.  I wish you a happy & healthy 9 months...
