Horrible reaction to Monistat

I recently had a yeast infection and since I'd had them before and instantly knew what it was, I decided to try Monistat 3 day instead of making a trip to the doctor for the Diflucan, which is what I had done in the past. While I was using it I noticed that over the 3 day period it was getting harder for me to fit the application in and by day 3 I had completely swollen and it felt like it was on fire! The yeast infection is gone now, but I am still swollen and still have slight burning every now and then, not so much painful as it is annoying, and it has been 5 days since I used this product! It's going down a bit, but it seems to be taking its time..anyone know how I might be able to speed the healing process?? Next time I'll just get the Diflucan and avoid all of this!

MONISTAT 1 IS DANGEROUS!!!  iT HAS 1200MG OF MICONAZOLE NITRATE IN IT!!!!!
This product should be taken off the shelves NOWWWWWW!!!!!!!!
70 % of women have a bad reaction to it like a intense burning vagina it is horrible.
You will want to die!!!  Trust me!!! Do not take !!!!!
The makers of this evil product are Jhonson and Johnson and I have talked with them several times and they give me the run around and basically tell me in a nice way that they do not care and to call your doctor and lawyer.  So I did.  But, good news for me is that I am a lawyer...right here in the New York City where they are.  Too bad for them.
They have been accused of taking bad claims that women have left concerning the bad, horrific reactions they have had off the message boards....they get their on employees to post good messgaes on the same sites.
If you would like to join my class-action lawsuit please write me at feedincorporated at hotmail.
Do not use Monistat ! or any monistat product.

If only I had read all of the posts before using this product!!! I thought I was going to pass out from the INTENSE-EXTREME BURNING, ITCHING, THROBBING, SWELLING.  It felt like I had inserted LIQUID FIRE!!!   MONISTAT ONE DAY TREATMENT (1200 MG) needs to be taken off of store shelves IMMEDIATELY!!!!  I submitted a MedWatch Online Voluntary Submission Form 3500 to the FDA.  I would suggest that anyone who has experienced the same HORRIFIC REACTIONS do the same.

I've never had a problem with over the counter medicine for yeast infections. I don't get them very often, maybe once every 3 years or so. Until about 2 months ago. I had a little bit of itchiness which is not common for me, so I went and got some yeast infection medication. For the record, it wasn't Monistat. Anyway, I inserted the first one and went to bed. I awoke with the most painful awful burning itching I have ever felt down there in my LIFE. I accidentally cut the skin down there from scratching too hard if you can believe it. It felt like my vagina was on FIRE!!!

I used Vagisil cream repeatedly throughout the day to ease the awful painful burning itchy symptoms. When I went to the obgyn, it turned out I had a mild case of bacterial vaginosis, NOT a yeast infection. If you look up bv, the symptoms sound really awful but it can be so mild it is mistaken for a yeast infection. I never had the "fishy smell" which is basically a guarantee you have bv. It didn't even itch very badly, it was VERY mild. And I had a little discharge. Sounds like a yeast infection right?? I spoke with one woman who also mistook her case of bv for a yeast infection and self-treated. She ended up having to go to the hospital to have the medicine flushed from her vagina :(

******! ******! ******!  Get a Summers Eve ****** with vinegar (so it’s already pre-mixed) Do it like 4x's. Get that stuff out and wash that cream off the outside with a mild soap or use a gentle Summers Eve cleanser.  This past Saturday afternoon I started to feel a yeast infection coming on and I was going to wait till Monday to see my OBGYN, but by Sunday morning it was getting allot worse so I called my Doctor and he prescribed Diflucan.  I thought I would double duty it and pick up some Monistat 1 to help with the symptoms ASAP. DUMB IDEA! Almost immediately the burning started getting worse, and my vagina swelled up so bad I could barely sit, it hurts so bad I almost cried.  I just thought it was the yeast infection; I've had them before but never experienced pain like this.  I found this blog and felt relieved to know it wasn't just me; I also did some more research. The web is a great thing.  My doc prescribed me some cortisone cream which I didn't even need after I douched.  I felt 80% better immediately after I douched and cleaned up the area. I am not going to use the cream unless I absolutely need to.  I just feel a little tender, not to bad though from that Monistat cream, it’s like it ate a layer of my skin off.  It was even hard to ****** cause it was so swollen BUT so worth it!!!!

This is unbelievable!  All the posts I am reading on here about Monistat!  I used it this evening for the first time ever.... Monistat 3 .... and I am on FIRE!!!!!  Absolutely terrible!  Swollen three times the size I should be, everywhere - especially where I put the cream!  Took two baths to try and wash everything off but of course, the suppository is going to take a few days to exit the body!  What a nightmare..... does anyone have any quick remedies to relieve some of the burning?  I am using a cold wash cloth, but as soon as it gets warmer, back to square one!  Why is this product STILL on the market?  Do the manufacturers ever read these posts?

Last night, I tried Miconazole-3 for the first time (a CVS brand of Monistat.). I used the external cream (2%) first during the day, and it was fine. At night, I tried the first of 3 cream-filled applicators.

Just seconds after I inserted the 4% cream, I knew something was wrong.  I felt the most severe itching I've ever felt in my life!!!!  I kept praying it would get less intense after a few minutes, but it didn't.  It was 10000 times worse than the itch of a yeast infection!!!

I gave up and went to the bathroom about an hour after insertion to try to get some of the stuff out of me, but it still itches like hell, so I couldn't sleep and spent hours online finding that many other women have had this reaction.

The thing is, I remember using Monistat-7 years ago and it was fine.  I think doubling the strength of the meds so it works in half the time is the problem.  If Monistat-3 created such torturous itching, I can't imagine how much more painful Monistat-1 would be!

I woke up this morning, still in slight pain with some itching.  I'm actually considering douching for the first time in my life because I want this poison out of me!  No way am I finishing the product.

I took the CVS brand as well and am having a horrible reaction. Severe swelling, itching and redness. I can't sit or walk well. I want to just cry with pain. I am going to try the douche recommendation and hope it helps. I will NEVER take this stuff again!

I agree, Monistat one "egg" ovule needs to be banned. Johnson and Johnson takes NO RESPONSIBILITY for it and blames YOU for not being your own all-knowing physician and using Monistat in the first place when MAYBE you had BV or something else that YOU WRONGLY mistook for a Yeast Infection, you silly girl. Now live with the pain because of your mistake... Really IRRITATING. Vulvodynia is MISERY and Monistat CAUSES IT! I firmly believe that any woman who got vulvodynia on the heels of using Monistat should join a class action since I tried to work with Johnson and Johnson but they refuse to acknowledge that they might possibly be wrong (after years of stalling, ignoring the problem and accusing YOU of being wrong. My guess is that they have had hundreds of similar complaints and want to make money off of women, despite the pain they cause them, and never help them with their uninsured medical bills or pain and suffering. I lived with unbearable pain for years and they gave me only $20 which I spent to end up with vulvodynia in the first place!! What an injustice... I have read dozens and dozens of posts that say others got vulvodynia, vulvar vestibulitis, itching, burning, etc. RIGHT AFTER they used the Monistat. Too much of a coincidence in my book and I plan to pursue this.  So should anyone else who has had an issue with it or this will keep on happening to women since it doesn't cause vulvodynia in EVERYONE, just alot of people. So we are the unimportant casualties in their minds. We are WOMEN, PEOPLE, who deserve to not have products that harm us on the shelves at the drug store. Eventually, I think the formula will be changed when they keep hearing this, but until enough noise is made from the sufferers, nothing will change because it's too costly for them to change it. I think a class action is the only way and if someone really has one, I am in.

Omg!!! I am so happy/not happy to be reading this!!! I also used Monistat. I used Monistat 7 though which I guess isn't as bad of a dosage or something I'm not sure but either way just seconds after I inserted the cream....horrible burning pain to the point of tears and where I felt like I was going to pass out! It was insane!!! I thought maybe something was wrong with me. I am glad to read that I am not the only one with this problem and that maybe this is normal. I think I will take a trip to the doc to get my yeast infection fixed. My mom has used it before and she had no problems with it. I guess it affects everyone differently. I tried to wash it all out but it is still not out and it is burning like crazy still... ugh can't wait till the burning stops. I wish I would have read this post before I had taken it. i hope they do take this product off the shelves and save some other women from the pain we have went through!!!!

Oh my, I had too used Monistat 1 and had a severe reaction in the middle of the night just tonight.  I have cleaned myself up as best I can, but I am still burning.  I had just started a new sexual relationship and then developed a UTI and yeast infection.  Dr. gave me meds for both, and then tested for STD's which were all negative.  So I felt the yeast coming back... thought I'd be smart and due the one night treatment... very bad decision.  Now feel like most of your on fire and burning.  I've tried to remove as much as is left of the exploded contents... I have a call into my Dr., but of course it's the holiday.  How long does this feeling last, can anything be done to speed up the process and will I ever be normal again. From your posts it sound like I may be in a huge mess....

This is Jane, thought I'd let posters know that the burning, etc... did stop and I seem to be okay for now.   I guess I will know if the YI comes back with a vengenance.  In the meantime I will be calling Monistat and reporting and filing an FDA report.  There is no excuse for a product to cause such reaction in so many women.

This happened to me as well.  I had a mild infection, thought I would use monistat 1 to get it taken care of early.  BIG mistake.  SEVERE burning/itching like I've never felt before, and the area swelled up so bad that I was really worried.  Went to my doctor and and she told me I was allergic to monistat, gave me hydrocortisone cream and a diflucan.  I took the previous poster's advice and douched several times with summer's eve with vinegar (vinegar is known to restore the pH balance, which a yeastie throws out of whack).  I IMMEDIATELY felt so much better.  That was around 11am, now, at 5, the swelling is down considerably and the burning/itching is almost completely gone.  Stay away from monistat ladies!!

I am SO glad I looked up "allergic reaction to miconazole." I just thought I was being a baby and the intense burning itch just meant it was doing its job. Like many said, this PAIN was worse than the symptoms of the yeast infection! I used the CVS generic version too (3-day treatment) for 2 nights, but I am NO WAY gonna use it tonight (esp. since I started my period and don't even wanna go there)! Funny thing is, I used the CVS brand of tioconazole, a 1-day treatment, for my last YI, and I had no problems and the YI quickly cleared up. This is terrible that so many of us are having this problem, but I'm actually glad I'm not the only one--now I know I'm not crazy and that I will never, ever use Monistat or miconazole again.

I just used the off-brand Monistat, and the burning got sooo bad!  It was crazy! I'm glad I found this.  I'm going to the doc today to get something fixed.  It might be BV, but I don't think so.  I used Monistat 1 last week, and when it only sorta worked, I thought it was just because I didn't take it at night, so today I picked up the Miconazole 3-day, at the pharmacists recommendation (nice gal, not blaming her for anything).  Holy ****!  It's starting to go away, but I think some of that is because the medication is coming out, because I'm at work.  Either way, glad I found this!

I sued this Monistat Ovule 1 thingy myself last week and a few days later intense burning in my opening.  I was about in tears one night.  Thought I had a yeast infection, which I have only had once in my life about 3 years ago, but I am not so sure I did.  I think I have also had a reaction to this stupid stuff.  I have an appt with the gyno next week for my yearly pap and I am going to discuss this with him.  The burning is the worst when I sit.  I pray it goes away soon.  I thought it was gone and then a few days later the burning came back.

OMG!
I just tried the Monistat Ovule 1 yesterday afternoon. I am worse off now than I was before! The burning on my vulva is horrible! Does anyone know how long it will take to get rid of this burning? It is awful. Does anyone know how long it will take for all of this cream to come out? Please do not take the one day if you have an infection. I seriously am in more discomfort than I was before I started any treatment. This product needs to be banned and taken off the market!!!!

It's 3am in the morning and I'm in intense pain.  I used the Monistat one ovule because I didn't have time to call my gyno.  Bad mistake.  Like everyone else, I'm worse off than where I started and WILL NEVER USE THIS PRODUCT AGAIN!  I'm wasting precious sleeping time trying to find solutions.  My burning is internal not external.  I've used a cool towel, which provided relief only with the towel inside of me.  If the pain/burning intensity doesn't lessen, I will douche it out.  This product is a total waste of money and precious sleeping time.

I am the QUEEN of yeast infections and have at least 5  a year.  I normally take Diflucan but since I've been pregnant straight for the past 2 years the doctor wont prescribe it.  They said its REALLY bad for your liver and not good for the baby.  So with my last pregnancy i did monistat 7 and the first night was extreme itching, second night was mild itching and then 3-7 nights were just fine.  Once I had my baby I had another one and the same thing.  I'm now 4 months pregnant and have a raging yeast infection and I started the Monistat 7 lastnight and the extreme itch is back.. I know it will be better soon but it's hell to get through.. I recommend the pill Diflucan to anyone.. that was the best thing ever regardless of what the doctor said haha. But the itching will stop.. My whole thinking is when you use mouth wash it burns when its killing the germs so thats why the monistat is itching because its killing the bacteria.. who knows

Ladies, I have experienced the same issues.  I have been diagnosed with vulvodynia after using Monistat.  I've tried contacting "monistatisdanger" above, but not response.

I've talked to Johnson & Johnson and they told me I'm the only person that has complained (yeah, right).  I told them I will have all of the women I can find contact them.  Can you ladies please contact me so we can join together and prevent this from happening to other women?

Did your symptoms ever go away?? Permanent damage?
Avatar universal
I too just earlier this evening tried the one day dose for Monistat and I am in tears.  Worse than I ever thought it could be and will never recommend or use this product again.  I would have rather suffered through the yeast infection and let my body naturally cleanse itself anyday than stay up with my body feeling like it's on fire and getting no sleep!

I have had symptoms of a yeast infections for about a week now and decided to do a treatment.  I got the Miconazole 3 pack from Rite Aid and used it last night.  I will NEVER insert this poison in me again!!!!!! 2 minutes after inserting the cream I started getting an EXTREME internal itch.  I thought it was normal but after 5 minutes the intense itch had gotten to torturous levels.  I knew something was wrong so I jumped in the shower and immediately tried to get the stuff out of me.  My husband wanted to take me to the E.R. but I don't have health insurance so he found this forum instead, which made me feel a bit better knowing that this has happened to other woman.  Basically,  I worked this stuff out of me by squeezing my stomach muscles and wiping with a cold, clean, washcloth while I itched ferociously!!!  I was literally in tears at one point.  After an hour I was feeling well enough to get out of the cold shower (you know you are in pain if you can take an hour long cold shower in February).  Needless to say I will never use this product again!!!!
