I am struggling with PCOS.

I've pretty much known that I've had PCOS for years. Earlier this year, I started skipping periods and gaining a ton of weight, so I finally went to the doctor to confirm it. We started with a generic, low dose birth control to regulate my periods and hopefully my hormones, but it made me incredibly depressed and I had to stop after the first month. We then tried metformin to help my weight by aiding my body in processing insulin. It made me incredibly sick and I stopped after a week.
I am working on maintaining motivation to work out regularly, and my eating habits could be better, but they are not unhealthy by any means.
I guess I'm just looking for some support and advice on how to look and feel healthy again. Are there any other medications that have helped anyone else function the way they used to?
Please note, I am not trying to get pregnant at the moment. I am terrified of trouble with fertility when it comes time, but I am trying to focus on one thing at a time and my difficulty dropping all the weight that I've gained has taken a major hit to my self esteem.

Are, I'm sorry about the pcos  as that is a hard diagnosis to deal with. Talk to your doctor as they are coming up with new ways to treat it. An example is that they use a drug that is mainly for diabetes called Met Forman to treat PCOS now.  So talk to your doctor about what all you can try. And if you are depressed, hormones do affect our mood. However, you may need to treat the depression as a separate issue. Depression is treatable and there's a wide variety of choices on how to do that

As I mentioned, I was put on metformin and it makes me incredibly sick.
Usually I can deal with the depression, it just got much worse when I was on birth control.
I have only been seeing my obgyn though. I need to get into a primary physician.
Oh, sorry.  I missed that!  I wonder if there aren't other options.  Now, you could treat the depression.  The current drugs available are fairly well tolerated and work well.  This is an option.  But I think one thing that almost always works for me when in a funk (not clinically depressed but down) is to start exercising.  It boosts our body's natural happy chemical and just makes me feel better about myself.  I try to get a little extra sleep too.  I'm sorry about pcos as that is hard.  I have a friends who have this and work on it.  Both are avid work out people.  Do you do much of that?  When we are depressed, sometimes it is hard to get going with it.
