Non menstrual, confirmed vaginal bleeding...?

My name is Rebecca, and for the last several days(and between every period for the last 6 months) I have been experiencing light vaginal bleeding starting right before ovulation, but until this month that normal amount of bleeding has never increased or failed to stop after 24 hours. It is now marking my fourth day of mild bleeding/clotting, and I'm two weeks shy of the expected start of my period. I've taken pregnancy tests and have a confirmed negative, so it isn't that. I don't have any infections, and my doctor doesn't know what it causing my bleeding either.

I have regular sex with no instances of vaginal tearing, and when I discovered I was allergic to latex last year I switched to a non-latex variety, so it isn't that. I've been searching for days for reasons why this is happening, but so far no such luck is mine. While I have no cramping, the unexpected and unexplained bleeding is still scary. My thyroid function is normal, and other than a readily unpredictable period(which as a 20-year-old I have now been having for 12 years) I have no other complications. Anyone have any idea as to what could be going on with me?

Thank you for your words of advice, though I'd like to clarify some things. I'm not taking birth control pills(my mother is severely allergic and we share about 80% of allergies), I'm not pregnant, I'm infection free, my blood sugar and thyroid have been tested and are completely normal, and are in fact unusually so for someone of my height and weight.(5 foot 3 and 200 pounds). I haven't had any other tests done in a while, as I'm out of work and in between school sessions, but now something new has occurred.

I DID start my regular period before, but this month I've had spotting for the last 6 days, and regular flow for two, and now I'm back to spotting. I highly suspect polycystic ovarian syndrome or a testosterone imbalance, but as previously mentioned, I can't afford any tests or exams at this time. The vast change in my menstrual cycle over the last 6 months has been highly disconcerting as you can imagine. I hope that this either start returning to normal, or I can save up the money to see a doctor. I'm lucky enough to have insurance, but the lack of funds makes it impossible.

MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL
Hello Rebecca,

It looks like intermenstrual bleeding. Main causes of spotting between periods could be due to pregnancy, birth control pills, infection in an area of the body related to menstruation (including the vagina, the cervix and even the bladder). Other causes could be polycystic ovarian syndrome, diseases of pituitary gland, hormonal imbalance of estrogen and progesterone and uterine abnormalities like fibroid and  cervical dysplasia. Your doctor may consider tests like blood sugar levels, thyroid function test, prolactin, follicle-stimulating hormone (FSA), estrogen, and testosterone. Imaging studies, such as ultrasound, X-ray, and CT scan may also be recommended in certain individuals.

It is very difficult to precisely confirm a diagnosis without examination and investigations and the answer is based on the medical information provided. For exact diagnosis, you are requested to consult your doctor. I sincerely hope that helps. Take care and please do keep me posted on how you are doing.
