I've been induced twice. Pitocin is uterine dynomite.  Definately get the epidural.  The contractions are unbelievable.  With my first son, I had him two hours after the pitocin.  And my most recent addition took five hours..  My daughter came in six hours without pitocin so I'm pretty quick to progress either way. So long as you are effaced, you should have not problem with the pitocin.  Good luck

3 children induced with pitocin.  All three labors progressed RAPIDLY once they started the pitocin drip.  My 1st - 6 hrs til delivery, My 2nd - 3 hrs til delivery, my 3rd - about 45 minutes.  Mind you, they broke my water at the time they started the drip.. that may have been it, but either way, it was quick, get the epidural :)   Good Luck!

Pitocin is just the labratory made version of the same chemical that our body makes to start labor, oxytocin. They start an iv and a low dose while you are on the fetal monitor. It can be increased at 15-20 minute intervals, 1 unit, at a time. Contractions do the best dilation at 2 minutes apart. They will monitor to make sure that you don't get hyperstimulated-having a contraction that is too long or too close together. Best wishes and congratulations to you. Oh, sometimes when you dilate to 4cm or so, the dr will break your water and they may actually have to decrease the pitocin even stop it because your body has taken over with the oxytocin.
