Welcome to the club. I am an infectious diseases specialist.  A month ago I caught a cold from my 4 year old grandson.  I'm still coughing.  It's pretty common to get persistent cough for several weeks after a garden variety cold; it's called post-viral bronchitis and it's very common.  There is nothing to do about it:  asthma inhalers typically don't work well, inhaled steroids don't work well, and cough suppressants produce only transient relief (and stop working entirely after repeated use).  But it's not harmful, and eventually goes away.  Usually takes 6 weeks for me--so you're probably close to clearing up on its own.  It's a pain the the butt, but not a sign of anything serious.  As a reasonably expert specialist, I can't successfully treat myself--so don't keep up your own hopes for finding something magic.  Isn't going to happen.

See if you have any white spots in your mouth, throat or tonsils. If so you will need antibiotics. The vicks maybe aggravatting it is for breathing. You could try a herbal tea from the health shop for the cough but it seems pretty bad if it is affecting your back. Try and see a doctor.  If you are coughing blood or green you still have an infection and may need antibiotics. You don't want a chest infection as in the long run it will cost you more than to see a doctor now.

you need to sweat out the toxins that are in your system. if you visited a dry sauna and had a good sweat, you'd be amazed at how fast it will go away.

It could be that your lungs are iratated by something, like asthma-ish. That is a very long time, I would go to the Docs. They might put you on an inhailer or even steroids if there is too much inflamation. You really shouldn't take over the counter meds for more than 2 weeks straight.

Good luck.

6 weeks is way too long for a cough.  You need to see a Dr and find out exactly what is wrong.

Sometimes coughs just linger for awhile. But this happened to me one time and it turned out I needed more antibiotics. You actually really should go to the dr.

When ever I get a nagging cough I always make a cup of hot water, add lemon juice and honey and drink, i try to do that at least every hour or so, it helps the cough and it soothes the throat as well, drink plenty of fluids, I would advise you though, if it continues for much longer, i would definatly give my dr a call, there could be an underlying factor as to why you are continuing to cough like this, you can never be too carefull.
