Using birth control pills to delay period if you don't normally take them?

Hi! I'm traveling across the country to see my boyfriend this weekend, after not having seen him for two whole months. We're in a long distance relationship and we usually only get to see each other once a month for a few days at a time. Needless to say, this is a really special occasion for us! Unfortunately, my period is expected to arrive anywhere from Sunday through Tuesday, threatening to put a damper on some uh, plans!

Today, I talked to my doctor about taking a drug called Primolut N, a hormone that delays your period (which I read about online), but she said she wasn't comfortable prescribing it to me and said that regular birth control pills would work just as well. She gave me a prescription for Loestrin and said I could start and stop taking it any time. However, I forgot to ask her about when the best time to start on them is!

See, the reason why I'm not on any hormonal birth control is because they usually make me very bloated and moody. However, I'm willing to deal with that sort of thing if it's a very short term - maybe one week or so at the most. What I'm saying is that I'd like to take the Loestrin for as little time as possible. If my period is supposed to arrive around Sunday, when would be the best time to start on the Loestrin? I know that with Primolut-N, you're supposed to start taking it 3 days before your period is supposed to start. Is it the same with Loestrin, do you think? I would ask my doctor but she's so hard to reach and don't want to accidentally miss my window of time!

Any help at all would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

You can safely skip your period for an extended amount of time. Studies show no harm is done in skipping periods for even long amounts of time. Just don't take the placebo pills the last week of your birth control pills, instead go directly to the next package.
Have fun on your vacation!

you run the risk of getting your period for a long time and even during your "plans" messing with birth control to skip a period is not always going to work the way you plan. i "skiped" some when i was going on vacation and was going to be in the poll and out tanning. i wound up getting my "period" for the 1 1/2 weeks i was down there along with the following weeks when i got home
