Have fibriods made concieving or pregnancy harder?

I have two fibroids one large and one small.  I thought they would give me a problem getting pregnant, but they didn't because I got pregnant in April and we weren't even really trying.  Unfortunately, I lost the baby at 8 weeks.  My docs didn't think the fibroids were a problem.  My mom has 3 fibroids and had 6 children.  I think she discovered her fibroids with the last two.

I am just wondering what anyone else's experiences with fibroids have been regarding their pregnancy.

Thanks,

Mrs Moogie

My story goes like this.
I got married in feb 2009 and my husband was overseas. I used to feel a lump in my abdomen since early 2008. Didn't know what it was until my husband asked me to get checked it out. April 2009 i go for ultrasounds and am shocked to find out i have fibroids. This is a large one measuring 10 cm in the fundus; a solitary fibroid. All my world has come crashing down at this point. I am newly wed, will i have children. I had sleepless nights and nightmares. I was hesitant to do myomectomy and possibilities thereafter. In october my husband resigns his job overseas and joins me. I wanted to try if we would have children without the myomectomy. October and counting every month thereafter i was desperate to get pregnant. Outlook was bleak. No luck till april 2010 i find out i was preggo. All the days till then was agonising. Even worse was when the following month i was at the doctors office having decided on myomectomy. i find out i was pregnant and at the same time time a week later i started bleeding. i was grief stricken.i was having a miscarriage. Doctor said the large fibroid was sucking up all blood from the baby. Finally i am having scheduled myomectomy Aug 2010. i desperately tried until august to get pregnant but no luck this time. it all seemed the large fibroid was the hinderance.august came i had the myomectomy. All this time i prayed a lot. I prayed the rosary daily morning evening and at breaks from work.i cried out to the lord to heal me from this terrible illness i had. my doctor was great too. her name millicent comrie. she is a doc at NY.
Myomectomy goes well and i started healing. Doc said no trying for six months. But after the myomectomy my husband and i was guess we were too excited to start to try again. We started to try in november and in december we hit the jackpot. Next month i find out i am pregnant and due september 2011. o my joy if only words could explain. But i went on to have a successful pregnancy with minor bleeding in March, guess because of trying too soon. I was on complete bed rest since. I gave birth to baby girl and today she is 6 months old. There goes my story of agony to joy. Today i feel truely blessed to have her in my arms. praise to lord jesus christ for he truely saved me.

Thanks islandgirl457, I can use it! The pregnancy is going well, minus him being small, and now that I'm 30 weeks I feel very pregnant.

I know that my 14 cm fibriod is in the lining of my uterus but to be honest I'm not sure which part (outer or inner). I will ask my doctor at my ultrasound on Friday and let you know.

Thanks for your encouragement. I wanted to find out what type of fibroids do you have? Are they intramural (In the muscle), submucosal (In the inner lining of the uterus)
pedunclated ( hanging from a stalk) or subsersol (outter lining of the uterus) The reason I ask, is that thought the type that interfere with conception is the submucosal.
How is your pregnancy doing now. I will pray for you.

I wanted to post this only so that anyone looking this up wont be completely discouraged if they are pregnant. I mean this out of the best of intentions, and I am so sorry for you women who have lost babies due to your fibroids.

I am currently 28 weeks pregnant and doing great with a large 14cm fibroid and a few more in a cluster. My big fibroid was around 10cm when I found out I was pregnant, but your hormones sometimes make them grow. My conception was a surprise, so I didn't have a problem conceiving. In my case my doctor suggests me not having them removed until I am finished having kids. I say this only to say that if you are pregnant with a fibroid know that it is possible to carry full term. I may look like I have twins and my boy is a bit cramped but I am having a healthy pregnancy.

Just to note, here are the complications I have had because of my fibroids:
1. Bleeding a few times, the last being at 14 weeks. I was first thought to have miscarried but it was determined it wasnt the baby even though it was about like a heavy period type bleeding.
2. My boy is on the small end of the scale. He's in the 16th percentile for weight and height according to the ultrasounds I now get monthly (because you cannot monitor the growth by measurement).
3. Very minor but: I measure like I am having twins, and my skin has many stretch marks and is itchy because my belly seems to grow faster, as there is extra stuff in there.
4. Possibility: I may need to have a C-Section if my fibroid gets in the way of the birth canal, and if the baby is breached (which for me he is not). I am still waiting to confirm that they anticipate me having a normal vaginal delivery, depending on how my uterus grows in these final 12 weeks.

I hope this helps someone looking. Thanks!

Hi, well my doctor does not recommend the remobilization for you women. Only for women that are past menopause, because it can block other things like the tubes. The best treatment for it for a person as young as you are is myomectomy; this preserves the uterus for future pregnancy. It is a major surgery but safe from what I hear. I will be having that done pretty soon here, I also have a fibroid that cause me long heavy periods and might have been the cause for my miscarriage 4 months ago, they don’t know for sure, but I figure better be safe than sorry. I am scared about surgery but I pray that I'm making the right decision and based my own research and what the doctors have told me, this seems to be the best option, it is very uncomfortable living with fibroids so why should I? Anyhow, best of luck to you and make sure you get different opinions for your specific case.
Hopeful K

Hello,

I am 27 and have recently discovered the presence of fibroids in my uterus after running to the emergency room due to severe abdominal pain. One is 8cms big and several smaller ones according to the ultrasound results. Prior to this incident, I had been experiencing heavy pain during my periods and severe constipation: I did not see a doctor thinking the pain was normal during periods and that the constipation was probably a temporary irregularity, I am very optimistic! I also thought for a while that my habit of eating excessive ice was the result of my sluggish bowel movement, by OBGYN says that has no effect. I have scheduled an appointment to see a radiologist at Alexandria Hospital for possible treatment options. My OBGYN does not know if my constipation, which is the biggest problem for me at this point, is caused by these fibroids but I am convinced after reading this site. For the moment, I am controlling the pain with pain killers and using stimulant laxative for my constipation; they both help a great deal! I am hoping I can do the fibroid embolization treatment but I would like for someone to comment on this option if possible. Does it really work and remove these fibroids, is it effective etc...

I highly appreciate all the suggestions I can get!! Than you all!!

Thanks for your comments.  Smiley, I didn't realize you commented or I would have wrote sooner.  About 6 weeks after my miscarriage my husband and I tried to conceive again.  After 3 months (each month with a horrible period) I asked my OB-GYN for a pelvic MRI to see how big my fibroids were and to see if it would be wise to keep trying without really knowing how big the fibroids were.  He ordered the MRI and recommended I see a fertility specialist who specializes in fibroids.  That turned out the best thing for me.  It turned out that I had 4 fibriods, not 2 like the originally thought.  My largest fibroid was 12 centimeters!  The others were smaller.  With this new info, my OB-GYN told me the large fibroid was probably responsible for my miscarriage and that I probably wouldn't be able to carry a pregnancy to term.  In an odd way this information helped me to have a little peace of mind about my miscarriage.  At least I knew a possible why it happened.  I met with the fertility/fibroid specialist who recommend surgery to remove the fibroids.  First, he wanted me on meds for 12 weeks to shrink them.  He also recommended a top surgeon for to meet.  I started the meds in January.  In March I saw the specialist and also had a new pelvic MRI to see if the drugs were working.  The drugs were working.  The large one shrank the most.  However, the surgeon told me to stop the meds because they would make the fibroids too soft and therefore make the surgery harder to perform.  I immediately stopped the drugs.  In April I had a 6 hour myomectomy.  All the fibroids were removed.  They pulled out one the size of a large cantaloupe and three the size of golf balls.  I couldn't believe it.  Now I can really see how my baby didn't have a chance.  Keep in mind, I was on meds to shrink the fibroids so the large one was much bigger than that at the time of the pregnancy.  The doctors think my chances of having a successful pregnancy are very high.  However, because of my incisions, I'll have to have a c-section when I do get pregnant.  That's OK with me.

I wish you both the best.  Deeya32, good luck on your pregnancy.  I'll say a prayer for you.  Smiley213, good luck on your efforts.

Best wishes,

Mrs. Moogie

Doctors!! I think they tell us that fibriods have nothing to do with a miscarriage because they don't want us to worry. I lost my baby 2 years ago I was 10 weeks. I have serveral small fibriods. One doctor told me before I even got pregnant  that I would not be able to have children with my fibriods. I'm now pregnant again about 9 weeks I feel ok now but have doubts that I will be able to carry much longer.

Fibriods can make concieving or pregnancy very difficult. I had a fibriod and it was the size of a baseball. When I first found out I had a fibriod I was 1month pregnant. I was so scared. I carried my baby for 3month and then I had a miscarriage. Later I found out that the fibriod was taking the nutrients from the baby.So my baby had no chance of making it. I had to have my fibriod remove because I did'nt want to have another miscarriage. I also found out that fibriod can make your period really, really heavy. You also can have multiple miscarriages. I'm so glad I have gotten mines removed. Me and my husband are trying to concieve again.

P.S. I hope this info was helpful, best wishes to you
