Why is my period blood so dark?

My period was about 17 days late and it's usually not and it's been very dark, almost black discharge and I was wondering if there was any concern I should be having. It usually gets dark near the ending but never this dark or early in the period

Hi,
You might be experiencing the dark discharge because the blood might be older due to your period being later than usual. Sometimes older blood that hasn't been expelled from your body as quickly as your normal period gets rid of it, can appear dark burgundy or black. You know your body best, so if this is something that is causing you to worry, you should call your gynecologist/doctor for further advice.
