cause of hirsutism

by browneyedgirl1, Aug 23, 2007 02:49PM
I have hirsutism, like abnormal hair for a woman all over me (back, stomach, chest, face, thighs). I've never been to a doctor about it before but it's kinda obvious that I have it. My other symptoms that I think might be connected are: anxiety, hard-to-control acne, iregular periods (long time in between periods, more than 32 days). does any doctor know what could be the cause of my hirsutism? it's very bothersome and embarrasing and i'd like to get it treated.
thanks.

maybeit is poly cystic ovary syndrome this can cause excessive hair, irregular periods and acne.  i think it is easy to diagnose maybe with a blood test.  go visit your doctor to see.  we get embarrased over certain things with doctors but try to remember that is their job and they r used to seeing allsorts   good luck

yes, seems like the signs of poly cystic ovary syndrome. even if you're diagnosed with it, there's no need to worry about it. it is very common among women, and can be easily treated.  these days OB/GYN are prescribing "metformin" for PCOS.  This medicine does work. it is kind of new medicine, so some doctors don't practice it yet, but you should go to some very up to date doctor.  if you go to your OB/GYN do ask about thsi medicine. Initially, I lost about 15 pounds after taking this medicine....as soon as i lost weight, my periods were click on time, hair seemed to fade, and not to mention acnes were gone...it was in less than a month...and my confidance boosted a lot.  I hope you find the right doctor for you.. Remember, the underline cause of hirsutism is hormonal imbalance, and it is more important to have your periods on time, then everything falls into its place. good luck
