I started going to my gyny at 16 (I had irregular periods, with extremely heavy flow and excruciating cramps) and that's when he (despite him being a man I'm extremely comfortable with him, he's an amazing doctor.) started doing cervical exams and pap smears.

to my knowledge, you don't really need a pap smear unless you're sexually active. maybe your doctor is referring to the pap smear...

You've been seeing an obgyn since you were 12? that's early to start seeing one. It doesn't matter if you are a virgin or not, he can do the exam. At 18 you should have a check up, where they do a physical check of your vagina and cervix, and do a pap smear. You might want to have a female gyno which may make it less uncomfortable for you if you choose. good luck.
