If this lesion is Herpes, this could very possible be your first outbreak. If in fact it is your first outbreak, it is likely that you were infected in the recent month.
There are tons of websites with great information regarding the 'incubation' period and how long it takes after you are exposed to herpes and how long it takes for the lesions to appear.
Not everyone reacts the same way to the virus, you may also be suffering with 'flu' like symptoms, including but not limited to swollen glands and sore throat. You could also have fever, nausea, all sorts of symptoms that would lead you to believe you have the flu.
Like I said, everyone reacts differently and you should definitely wait until you have a clear diagnosis from the Dr before you engage in any sexual activity. Did they do any blood work? If so you need to wait and see if the antibodies have formed in your system, that is a clear way of diagnosing whether or not you have contracted Herpes and which one you have?
If the tests are positive for Herpes, it isn't the end of the world. There are great medications on the market that will help you manage this and you may never have another outbreak again. The important thing to remember is to be responsible and learn to take control of your health.

Could be a number of things, but if your Dr said its herpes it's best to go with what he/she has said. He can test the 'cut' you describe to see if it holds herpes virus and if so which type. Do you ever get cold sores? They are herpes.
Pictures are very misleading and often show the worst case scenario so don't go on what they look like do determine if you have the same thing
