how long can you detect HCG in your urine?

OK I was wondering how long you can detect HCG in your urine? I think I might me pregnet, but if I am i am a couple months along. I am heavy so I do not show, but my belly is hard and I think I felt something moving alittle.I do not have insur. right now so I can not go to hte doc's. So I was going to take a home test, but I know in the beginning your HCG levels rise high in the beginning, but after a couple months will it still pick it up? thanks.

I agree with Boosty's comment about HPT's showing false negatives even though your periods have been missed. I am facing a similar experience... my periods are 5 days overdue, I have pregnancy symptoms, but the HPTs keep coming negative. I am going for a blood test this monday. Will share with you what the bood test says. Every woman is different, and HPT's claim of being 99% accurate is only a probability.. not a certainty.

yes. maybe i didnt say it correctly, but what i meant was home pregnacy tests may show negative even if you are pregnant, the first two weeks after you missed your period, because you may not have enough pregnacy horomones that show up yet in your urin. thats what the doctors have told me.

home pregnancy tests wont show correctly the first two weeks after you miss your period, but after that, it should show right. but i dont mean to worry you, but heres why you should find a free clinic or somewhere that does them real cheap for you and you should do a blood test. because my friend found out shes pregnatn at 6 months. yes, it happens. she didnt do a blood test because she did billions of home pregnnacy tests during these months and all came out NEGATIVE. at six months, she finally got a positive and went to the doctor. but that doesnt happen often. so start by taking a honme pregnancy test. your chances are very good that it will show you the right answer, but try to go for a blood test if you can.

"home pregnancy tests wont show correctly the first two weeks after you miss your period"

That is incorrect.  Hpt's are about 99% accurate on the first day of your missed period.  Blood tests are that accurate even sooner.

Yes, you should definitely take a hpt if you suspect you are pg.  If you are, you'll need to see a doctor now and get started with prenatal care.

Once you are far enough along in a pregnancy (4,5,6 weeks) to get a positive hpt you'll always get a positive test until you deliver.  The hcg levels will never decrease low enough to be missed by a hpt as long as the pg is healthy and viable.

Good luck!!  You can get a cheap test from the Dollar Store if money is an issue.

Read my post above about HCG levels.

......just bought a new med book to add to my collection. And I'm surprised by reading that... "a false negative pregnancy test can occur if the test is done too early or TOO LATE because HCG levels start to dwindle a couple of months after conception."

So you'd better get a blood test also.

The book is "The New Harvard Guide to Women's Health".

Yes it will.  You should test and ease your mind.  If you are pregnant than you will be able to apply for medicaid and that will pay for the doc visits and the deliver. It can also cover the baby for a year after birth.  Test now, the sooner the better.
