Insomnia

Anyone up tonight?  I have insomnia again!  I used to take Ambien, but I had too many strange side effects.  I've taken the seratonin, but it didn't work that long for me.  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Thanks for the advice.  Atleast I am not alone!  You all are great!  I got a little sleep, but not much.  I'd like to drink wine, but it gives me severe migrains.  Oh well, it could be much worse.

Feel free to use this as an open forum.

i have the opposite reaction to some of them, too.  i have to take sudafed in the morning because it wires me.

i use restoril when on vacation to help sleep.  there are nights when it doesn't even seem to work a little bit.  then i toss in some tylenol pm or even an otc sleep aid.  probably not too safe, though!

Getting more exercise, and regulating my schedule so I couldn't rest at midday helped me a lot.

Try tylonol pm. I've never tried it, but I hear it's pretty good. My problem with sleeping is, i never get enough.

Rozeram?? Something like that is the non-addictive sleep aid. I was given a couple of samples of it and it didn't do squat for me. Even the Ambien only allows me like 5 hours and I wake up feeling like poo. I honestly think folks are better off having a glass of wine or a hot totty before bed;)

I don't know why you're having insomnia, but I use a natural herb called Vallarian Root, you can get it at any health food store.  I was using Tylenol PM, but figured I didn't need to put the "extra" stuff in my body if I didn't need it.  The Vallarian Root works great for me, w/out feeling groggy in the morning.

I'm here.  Who_dis unfortunately died over the weekend.

I have no good answers for the insomnia, god knows.  I take Tylenol PM, melatonin, and Valerian.  I still wake up every morning at 3am.

I will.  I was thinking about asking my doc for Sonata or that other new one that's non-addictive.  Benadryl and Nyquil keep me up all night...LOL  I'm the opposite when it comes to meds that cause drowsiness.

Do you have anxiety?  That can cause sleeplessness.  If so, maybe you can try a Benzodiazepine.  They often relax your mind and ease anxiety so you are able to sleep.

No anxiety here...not today anyway.  I have one of those brains that can't shut down at night.  This all started a few years ago when my late husband was sick.  I felt I could never really allow myself to sleep in fear I'd miss his call or something would happen.  Now, I guess I'm still doing that.  I can't quite figure how to turn it off.  He was also the "worrier" of the marriage and I was carefree.  Our roles reversed immediately, and now I am the serious one, eventhough he's gone.  I don't know if any of that makes sense or not.

lorazapam/ativan is about the only thing that works for me, and I rarely use it.  I was interested in the Valerian root, but who_is_this mentioned it doesn't work for her......I'll try it but I won't be surprised if it doesn't work. Nothing works for me and I just end up feeling like **** in the morning anyways.

I haven't slept a full eight hours in months!!! I haven't had a good night's sleep at all in the last few months. And when you take a sleep aid, and you are not able to fully sleep it off, you feel awful!!! I hate it. also I noticed when I take any sort of sleep aid, my eyes are very puffy in the morning, regardless of how long I slept. I think they must cause the eyes to retain water.

hello to all the new members, welcome back nanis. keep tellin' it like it is girl.

I don't know what happened to Sailors!!!

The unable to *shut off your mind* feeling responds well to benzodiazapines like ativan (as Shygirl suggested) or xanax.  Go to your Primary Health Care Doctor and tell him of this (subtle) sleep/mind problem.  I'm sure he will give you something to help and suggest some other things you can do to relax.

3 1/2 years isn't all that long after you've built a life with someone.  i'm glad to hear you're engaged tho!  do you have a date in mind?

You know I thought the same thing.  That I would never remarry and if I did it would be years and years.  I'll never forget when my dad passed away and my stepmom got married 3 years later, I couldn't understand.  However, it didn't change my relationship with her.  It just goes to show you....never say never.  I have not set a date as of yet....maybe sometime early next year.

and....it's all relative.  my dh's mother died when he was 20 after a long bout with cancer, and his father remarried one year later.  now THAT seemed fast :)

i've tried SO many things for sleep.  i'll think something is working, then it's back to insomnia.  i go in cycles, so it's always hard to tell at first whether i'm in an ok sleep cycle or if something is effective!

if you ever discover a good sleep aid, let me know :)
