I agree with only 300 extra calories too, but you mentioned being concerned about your sweet tooth. Keep in mind that as long as you are eating healthy foods and taking a prenatal vitamin occasionally sweets are ok. The only problem is that during pregnancy they might turn to fat easier making you chubby and stuck with extra weight after delivery.
I agree with ateague you only need to add 300 extra calories a day to what you normally eat for the baby. The sweets will only add extra pounds that will be harder to lose after the baby is born. Protein is really good to add
You actually don't eat for two, to sustain a healthy baby, a woman only needs to add 300 extra calories to her diet. That's like half a sandwich, it's surprising how many women feel the need to eat like crazy, but it's really not necessary. Good luck!
Babycenter is a great resource.
During my first trimester my appetite was non-existent. All I wanted was cold milk a cereal a couple times a day. So don't worry if you're not getting the recommended number of calories right away. The baby will take what it needs, don't worry about that.
The other thing is to try very hard to lay off the sweets. An occasional chocolate piece is fine, but try to reach for the carrots/cucumbers/apples instead of sweets. That will help you and baby be healthy and won't add excess weight to you.
Yeah check the site out...you wont believe how many calories you should take in in one day. When I was in my family planning class we had to make a weekly chart and break down Breakfast, Snack, Lunch, Snack, Dinner and a Snack for everyday. Everyone had the hardest time trying to get enough calories in for each day by the meal layout. I want to say its 2400 calories but I can remember for sure...I could be way off. Best of Luck!!
Go to babycenter.com and do a search on nutrition. You should be able to find something that will tell you what kinds of food and how much to eat. Good Luck.
