i smoked with my first even tho it didnt harm him it does harm other babies and can cause problems throu pregnancy i stopped just after i had him and would advise anyone not to smoke while pregnant, would you smoke in a room with a new born most sane people wouldnt. its even worse when pregnant because your child is smoking every cigerette you have. i regret doing it, it isnt worth the risk,

My mom smoked with all 4 of her kids - back in the 50's and 60's - and every one of us were fat hogs at birth, had all our fingers and toes and no birth defects or learning disabilities or any other problem.  We were all perfectly normal.  Does that mean pregnant women should smoke?  Heck no!  I personally don't think it's nearly as bad as a lot of other things like alcohol and drug abuse that can result in terrible physical and mental disabilities for the baby.  Funny how the baby boom coincided with a time in our history that more people smoked than ever before or since.

I find it interesting that society in general perceives smoking as being worse than alcoholism or other substance abuse.  There's also a whole lot more support for your average addict or alcoholic who wants to quit than your average smoker.  Substance abusers are told they have a disease and it's not their fault; smokers are just dirty, nasty, low-class, neanderthals who have no self-control or willpower and want to kill themselves and everyone around them.  Society says it's perfectly acceptable now to be pregnant out of wedlock.  It's even acceptable to be pregnant and an alcoholic or substance abuser as long as the mother states she wants help, but she'd better not dare be pregnant and smoke a cigarrette.  Show a picture of a smoker next to one of a person having a drink or smoking a joint, and most people will react more negatively to the cigarette smoker than the drinker or the stoner.   One more time, I'm not promoting smoking - far from it - just making a societal observation that I find baffling.
