menstrual cycle and ovulation

My DH and I have been ttc since November 2012. Prior to that I had had the Merana IUD in place (removed in November 2012) Since then, I've had regular periods, however, no idea if I'm ovulating. I went to my GYN last month and she instructed me to check my cervical mucus. Well, this past week AF visited. I noticed on the third day that there was a great deal of the egg white discharge along with the blood. My question is,  is it possible to ovulate while bleeding and that early in a cycle?  Thank you for any answers.

Hi specialmom. I had intercourae on Jan 30, at the tail end of my period (CD 8, I still had some dark red spotting in the AM, which has tapered off to light spotting by end of day). I still had some light brown spotting on Jan 31. On Feb 4 midnight, I had quite a lot of clear, watery stretchy CM when I went to the bathroom so I suspect that I was ovulation then. I don't track my temp and have never tried checking my cervix, so mucus is my only reference. What is the potential for pregnancy in this scenario, if unprotected sex.

Hi,

Here is how a cycle works (feel free to check this out with your doctor)---  day one is the first day of your period.  You begin counting from there.  Most women ovulate around midway through their cycle, day 14 is the average.  To get pregnant, doctors usually recommend having sex starting on day 10 and continuing to do so every other day for the next 5 days.  This catches the 24 to 48 hour period of ovulation.

I would say it is unlikely that you ovulated while on your period day 3.  That would indeed be unusual.  Never say never but obviously that would be a huge blip in the hormones.  I would say that mucus had to do with your cycle and not ovulation.

good luck

Ovulation starts soon after the menstruation period and sometimes may take place even by the end of the menstrual phase.. During ovulation the ovary sort of processes an egg and prepares if for fertilization which travels through the fallopian tubes to the uterus.. now the process of releasing an egg or two by the ovary is actually ovulation and is different from fertile period.. Your fertile period will not be during menstuation but nearly around the 14th or 15th day of the cycle( however may vary from person to person).. the most fertile period is when the egg is at the neck of the fallopian tube which is the ideal place for fertilization.. the body starts preparing itself during this time the cervical mucus is stechy, well lubricated just like an egg white.. engaging in coitus between your 12th and 16th day of the cycle would help in conceiving because a sperm inside the body has a life span of min 3 to max 7 days..(an egg has just 24 to 30 hours)... hope this helps.. good luck..
