please help..

This is something I've ignored for the past two years now, but I feel like it's time to come clean and hopefully get responses, input, advice and answers to my health question.

I'm almost 28 years old, and I haven't had a period in a little over two years now. Not even any spotting. When I was younger, I had irregular periods but also had health insurance. I saw an OBGYN about this, and they put me on birth control to "jumpstart" the periods back up. My irregularity was never this bad though -or- for this long. I think the longest I ever went without a period was several months -- but nothing over a year -- so right now, I'm a little bit on the worried side, as you can probably tell.

When I was 18 years old, I was taken to the ER for having severe abdominal pain and they found that I had a lot of ovarian cysts. This went away fast though, and I don't really have any pain going on anymore except for every now and then. Nothing severe though, and is always curable with a few motrin here and there. Here is my thing though, and I hope I don't get any judgement from this -- I'm only being completely honest with everyone here on the forums.

I'm a recovering addict to pain killers. I'm 70 days sober from Percocet today, as this was a daily usage thing for me for about two years, off and on, basically. Does anyone think that this might have something to do with the fact that I haven't had any periods over the past two years now? When I told my doctor that I'd become addicted to the Percocet he wrote for me, he shut the door on me without assisting me even though I thought I was being honest with him. Honesty is the best policy, right? I got sober.....on my own! Now that I've gotten over my addiction and haven't taken any pills since, I am trying to get my life back together where it needs to be.

Thank you in advance for helping me with this.

I've been a member in the addiction forum here for a few months now. That forum IS the reason why I am 71 days sober today. Thanks for all the input, it really helped. I hope some women can help me with this further. I don't really want to get back on birth control. When I got on BC before, it jumpstarted it but then it stopped when I stopped the BC, you know?

Hey, I have had no experience in either area you're asking about, but I can offer advice and support.
First of all CONGRATS! on doing this on your own! I understand how difficult it can be for a lot of people.
Second, there have been other women on here that have reported the same issue you're talking about. They don't have their period at all unless birth control forces it. It is a medical issue, and when you're trying to conceive, it can be much harder. May even require assistance.
So, here's my recommendation... You don't have insurance, that's not an issue. If you are still in school or have a low income, you can qualify for birth control assistance through Planned Parenthood (no i'm not an advocator, just offering venues). If you don't qualify for that program, they do have a sliding fee for b/c. Also, if you have a low income, you may be able to qualify for medical assistance. I qualified, and I got $200 worth of the patch, for FREE! :) I was so happy.
So basically, get on b/c. See if it jump starts your period again. If not, then seek out a doc. Since you already mentioned it to your prev doc (and he/she was a **** may I add!) bring it up as a concern. Mention that you've cleaned up, and on your own because of the other doc's refusal to help. It may be that the cysts came back, but since you were on pain meds you didn't notice. Also, try to find an addiction forum where you can connect to and talk about getting off and diff suggestions that may help.
once again! congrats on doing so well!
hope you figure this out

The reason I mentioned something about my doctor and being a recovering addict, is because now that I've told a medical professional about my addiction, I know that this is on my medical records out there in the medical "galaxy" if you know what I mean. I am afraid that if I go to another doctor and tell them about what is going on with my non-existance periods, this will make them feel differently about me if they know that I was once an addict to pain killers that were prescribed to me for two years every other week for ligetement pain. Does that make sense?
