It depends, because my husband and I were planning our second child and I did it five days before and it read positive. My cycle was always to the day every month so I knew the five days. I think some females don't and that is why they do it too soon.
If you know your cycle then you can do it, but if in doubt wait till first day of missed period.
Heck technology changes every year so things are more realiable today then last year.
I would suggest the day you first miss a period, that would seem more accurate. Five days is pushing the limits of a home test, and I have even heard of blood tests missing it that early.
