What causes the labia and surrounding skin to darken. I am 59. My periods stopped when I was 50. I have been happily married for 32 years. We had, what I would call, a healthy sex life, even though it has diminished.

There is skin hyperpigmentation and darkening in elderly. However if the darkening is accompanied with any leathery skin changes then acanthosis nigricans should be ruled out. If it is only darkening then you should not worry. Also do not use any topical agent on the skin without medical supervision as they have plenty of side effects.
