bv or bacterial vaginosis is almost always accompanied by a pronounced fishy or unplesant odor. they are still not sure why this occours but is supposed to be a change in the chemical balance of the vagina. it is said that bv even occours in girls who have never been sexually active, it is transmitted sexually though and yes you should be treated asap. if left untreated it is said to cause pid pelvic inflamatory disease.

A new odor (one you haven't noticed before) that is related to having a period can be something called gardnerella or bacterial vaginosis.  It isn't uncommon, and the main way people tell they have it is that they notice an odor when their period is over.  It also is something that DOES need to be treated at the doctors, since it needs antibiotics (it is an infection) and you don't want it to hang around.  Your husband will need a course of antibiotics too since it can be passed back to you from him.  Hope that's not it, but it is worth checking at the doc.
