One hormone pill is taken each day at about the same time for 21 days. Depending on your pack, you will either stop taking birth control pills for 7 days (as in the 21-day pack) or you will take a pill that contains no hormones for 7 days (the 28-day pack) - this is just a sugar pill and is there to serve as a reminder to take your pill everyday at the same time.
When you are taking these sugar pills - you get your period, actually it's not even a real period on the pill, it's bleeding that occurs because you stop taking the hormone pills. When you're on the pill you don't ovulate (or as you said, 'release the egg'), you suppress it during the three weeks you're on the pill & you won't ovulate during your "period". Here's something I found online:
"When you take oral contraceptives, it makes the lining of the uterus hostile to egg implantation and the mucus in the cervix tough for sperm to swim through. ... these benefits go away if you miss a day, increasing your risk for pregnancy." --http://www.obgyn.net
So again, the sugar pills are simply reminder pills... But to make the pill work properly you have to take it every day at the same time (or around the same time) and allow a month or so before you totally rely on the pill - that's what my DR told me. Wow, didn't realize I knew all these things, but I've been on the pill for about 10 years now.. Please also ask your DR or OBGYN and they will be sure to give you more detailed information.. or google it!
Good luck...
hi! i totally agree with the above post. i also took depo for over 4 years and then the pill for over 2. i never took a green pill(the sugar pills) the whole time i was on the pill but i am not saying for you not to b/c it is a reminder for you to take your pills. i never got p and i never took the green ones. also, like ama17 said you are not really having a period when you are on b/c pills. my dr told me that it makes your body think that your p. are you getting your af during the green pills? i wish you the best of luck.
ama17- hi! i am like you, you dont relze how much you know about things until you start reading peoples questions and then your like oh i know that maybe i can help them. it is a good feeling.
don't bother with those pills. you can even get bcp's that come in 21 day packs, so most of us, never take any pills for 7 days. you can have sex during this time and not have to worry. and yea, it's not really your period, it's a withdrawal bleed. as long as you start your new pack on time (you won't ovulate), as directed, it will be 99% effective.
now if I could only convince myself that that is enough protection!
