white patches on tonsils

I have white patches on one of my tonsils but it doesn't hurt. I just feels like it's a little swollen, but there's really no discomfort at all. What do you think it could be?

I used to have these white spots in my tonsils and I could actually dig them out, it was gross and they smelled bad. . I had them for a few years and was told it was allergies and I was given a nasal spray. Do they sometimes fly out of your mouth when you cough or laugh?  Do you have more than one?  I had a few in each tonsil and I went to my ENT, he took one look and say "oh yeah, you have tonsillitis, those has to come out". So I had my tonsils removed at 26 and it sucked but I had never had that problem again and have felt great ever since. Hardly ever get a sore throat and no more bad breath. So go see ENT and get them out!!

I've had this problem for as long as I can remember and it's annoying. I am often scratching my throat with my tongue and pressure..-hard to explain- but I make an annoying noise when I scratch my throat it helps to get the stones out sometimes! In my family only my dad and i have this problem... I don't know why?!?!

Guys! I just was tired of poking and scraping at my tonsils when I came up with a brilliant idea! I just used a water pic filled with warm water and some mouth wash, stuck the end of the water pic inside with my stone and turned it on and boom! It's out of there! Plus it's all clean now. Phew finally time to relax.

the tonsil stones are called tonsilloliths (i now know because someone posted the same question a month or so back). look them up. all the descriptions i found were so good, i immediately knew that's what i've got. some sites even have pics... ewwww.... but they are harmless.

Thrush can cause white spots too - and I know my oldest had it once and never complained that it hurt.. sooo.. another possibility??  :) Good Luck!

You know, I had those tonsil stones too!, They're pretty raunch, but if you're not feeling feverish at, it could definately be something to bring up in case it happens again- you'll know what it is.

I'm sorry I can't remember the "real" name for them but you might try looking up information about tonsil stones. Basicly it's just a buildup of bacteria and gunk that calcifies (sp) and forms little stones. They normally pop out and you swallow them without ever even noticing. Gross huh! But sometimes they can get a little bigger and cause irritation.  I was afraid that I had strep for about a month but didn't go to the doctor b/c I wasn't having any other symptoms besides the white spots and a little irritation. (I know that wasn't the smartest thing to do) But then I finally found out this is what it was. Other than being annoying and often times smelly these little guys don't cause too much trouble, unless in the rare case they get too big and then they might need to be removed surgically. I've noticed I tend to have them more often whenever I am having sinus drainage.

white patches on tonsils indicate strep throat or tonsilitis.   You need to get to the doctors immediatly, you are highly contagious.
