Thank you for your question. A TRUS guided prostate biopsy is usually a safe and well-tolerated procedure. However, complicatoins can include blood in the urine (hematuria), in the semen (hematospermia), or in the stool, and a dull ache in the perineum (area between the anus and the scrotum).  Sometimes blood clots may form in the bladder, as well.  Infections and even worse, sepsis, are rare complications.  Was your father given antibiotics before the procdedure or does he have a history of urinary tract infections?  Does he have a history of coronary artery disease or perhipheral vascular disease?

Urosepsis is usually caused by E. coli and is the most feared complication of transrectal needle biopsy of the prostate. It is important to determine the cause of the infection via blood and (possibly) urine cultures. And treat with antibiotics accordingly.

Thank you for your question and good luck.

Sincerely,

Ashutosh (Ash) K. Tewari, MD
