Hypo and feeling sick.

I originally went to to Dr because I have been feeling nauseaous on waking (for passed 2 months) and now in the day as well and my mouth feels full of acid a lot of the time I went onto the usual proton pump medication but it hasn't worked. By chance I had a blood test (I had a lot of the classic hypo symptoms as well) and  have just been diagonised as Hypo with this TSH @ 60 T4 @ 0 and have started treatment, but this hasn't helped with the sickness. Has anybody out there with this condition felt sick as well. I can't find any refs to this anywhere.

Hello,
I was just diagnosed with Subacute thyroiditus. I am told that this will "run its course" and "may or may not cause permanent damage" I'm getting alot of conflicting info. Can anyone tell me about what I can expect?

I'm going back to have my blood checked next week and the meds will be put up in stages as I've only done 3 weeks so far. I still get nausea everyday and I find this so hard to handle as I never know when it will come/and how long it will last as there is no pattern to it. Have you found this? I have had an endescope test and the doctor thought it could be caused by a slow gut/breakdown of food as my metobolic rate is still very slow. I have been prescibed a gut relaxant and will see if this helps. I am surprised the nausea isn't generally mentioned as a possible symtom as there are more people with this than I orginally thought. As yet no headaches though. I'm also having to force myself to eat on some days.

I'm no expert, but a TSH of 52 is pretty high!  I had blood drawn yesterday to check my TSH for my RAI treatment next week.  I have no idea where it's at, but yes - I wake with a headache every day and take tylenol around the clock for it.  The nausea was the worse.  I ended up calling and they prescribed an anti-nausea med for it, because I wasn't eating at all.  With you being on meds, I would get with your doc to discuss.  Seems that they would want you on a higher dose.
Good luck.  I'm feel for you, as I've been feeling pretty nasty for a while now!

Sorry about that blank entry. Hi! I am 34 and in Oct.06 had my thyroid removed. Currently I am on treated using Armour medication. My TSH level was normal for 2 months and now it is 52. I also feel very nauseated, tired, and also I am having severe headaches for about 3 weeks now. Is anyone else having severe headaches with hypo? I just feel so frustrated it seems like after 11 months it should be more regulated. How long does it seem to take to get it regulated?
Any suggestions? Thanks.

I have just found out I am hypo and been on meds for a little over 2 weeks so far - and yes I still have my thyroid gland. It's too early for me to say how things are going yet but I certainly feel a bit better than I did -  but thats not surprising as I could hardly walk, think clearly and felt sick and absolutely terrible before the test results came through. Next test is due in a couple of weeks.

I have only been on my meds for a little over 2 weeks and have the reverse problem to you right now (need to take lots of stuff for consitpation) but I have been told the nausea may be to do with the slow passage of food through the gut and will improve as my metibolic rate speed up.

Thanks for your comments Bernadette your the first person I have found that feels the same as me. Clearly going to be a long haul. I have only been on my med for a little over 2 weeks so early days. I have been told that it may be due to the very slow passage of food through the gut and will improve as my metobolic rate speeds up so here's hoping.

Do you mind if I ask why your TSH has been so high, and if you have a gland? I also have been living with a high TSH 47-60 for many years and no gland, but can't tolerate my thyroid supplement. Its as if it makes me have hyper symptoms after being on it for about 10 days. Don't know what to make of it and was wondering if you are having success getting your TSH down yet, and if malabsorbsion of the T-4 has been the cause of it.Sometimes I convert T4 to T3 and other times not. Do you have thyroid cancer? I'd appreciate your input, as being this hypo is terrible and very unhealthy for the whole body. Thanks

Did you also have troubles with your digestive track?  I'm also having to take tums because of the burning stomach, and have loose stools several times a day - which is NOT like me at all.  I hear you on the nausia though.  Nothing sounds good and even thinking about putting something in there makes me feel sick at times!!

I too have all those symptoms with hypo. My TSH 15 weeks ago was 48.  I actually lost 13 punds even though hypo because I couldn't eat with nausea.  They changed meds and the last TSH was at 21. Still low but going in the right direction. The nausea is persisting, although less, and the depression and anxiety too.I was told it could take 6-8 months before noticeable improvement. Hang in there. This condition, although treatable, sucks.  Bernadette

I had TT on 8/6/07 and am scheduled to have the RAI treatment the week of 9/17.  This past week, I have been feeling very much the same as you.  It feels a lot like when I was first pregnant, but I can definitely rule that out.  Sounds like there are many more people who have it too.  It's nasty!!

I've always some problems with heartburn, but shortly before being diagnosed as hypo I developed severe heartburn and reflux that woke me up at night. My gut instant is that being hypo makes conditions like reflux worse!! I saw a gastroenterologist who prescibed prevacid 30 mg. It's completely stopped the heratburn and reflux. None of the OTC products didn't help enough in my case.

Thanks for the response - I know the feeling it's difficult to do normal things as you just don't know when the nausea will hit you. Hope you get sorted out soon let me if your doctor comes up with anything positive.

I have been living with hypo for almost 9 years & have been on meds, but since last Oct. I have been experiencing nausousness almost everyday!  Sometimes out of nowhere!  It's very frustrating because I can't live a normal life always feeling nausous! :(  I have taking pregnacy tests & they always come out negative, so I can rule out being pregnant.  I will be seeing a doctor in a couple of days.  I hope he finds out what's wrong with me.  I'm 18 and I can't live life feeling this crappy :(

I assume you have had a pregnancy test.

TSH of 60 is severe hypothyroidism which may cause gastroparesis (slow stomach emptying) -- it may take 4-6 months of treatment for this to improve -- close monitoring is important in this regard as with the stomach problems, the absorption of thyroid medication may be inconsistent.  Target TSH is around 1.0.

Have your fasting bloodsugar checkedI It may be low and this causes nausea. I am hypothyroid and my fasting sugar was 45 on my initial blood test. Normal is 70-120.

I am hypo with a TSH @ 41.  Several weeks ago I suffered a pretty bad bout of acid reflux that required OTC zantac.  It would wake me up in the middle of the night - and it lasted several days.  I think that thyroid problems and stomach issues are certainly related because I am a healthy fit 28 year old that does not overeat or have a previous history of GERD.  My advice to you is sleep propped up to prevent acid from coming back up in your sleep when it is most disruptive.
