Tonsilitis/open forum

Hi Ladies, hope the weekend is treating you all good.
I had strep throat a few weeks ago, and it seemed to have went away. Then this week, it flared up really bad and now I have severe tonsilitis!!! :(  I'm so sick, and in so much pain. I started antibiotics yesterday at noon. How long till I start feeling better?? My throat feels like its full of razor blades, and it hurts very badly to swallow. Any suggestions on what I can eat or anything I can do to help alleviate the pain!? I've got a bad fever, have to change my clothes like once an hour.
My mom says the penicillin takes a good 24 hours to do its job before a person starts to feel better. is this true? anyone else experience tonsilitis?!

I had my tonsils out when I was 3, so I have no idea what you are going through.  It sounds very painful!  To help with the throat pain, I would suggest drinking lots of hot tea.  There are a few kinds that are specifically for sore throats.  I know The Republic of Tea makes one for sore throats, and it is wonderful.  As far as the throwing up medicine, I have a few suggestions.  Try spacing out the antibiotic and the Tylenol, so the anti has time to get into your system in case you vomit.  Also, candied ginger is great for nausea.  I don't know if you have access to a Wegmans, but I know they sell it in the Natural section.  Or, if you have a health food store around, they sell it there.  It sounds like you are taking a lot of antibiotics; you may want to supplement with probiotics for awhile when you are done, to replenish the "good bacteria" that the anti is killing.  That could also be the reason why your digestive system is weak.  Best of luck to you.

lucylocket, thanks for your concern! I tried the salt water, and it helped a lot, just had to make sure I didn't use too much salt!

tinaet, next time I will try motrin as this tylenol 3 has too many side effects, and  I dont like that.

mrs. canada, thank you for concern as well!! I did some reading and apparently tonisilitis is accompanied by fever and chills, I guess you've just lucked out, cuz believe me, it was painful, but luckily my fever has broken.

kenziesmom, thank you too!!! I guess the time is now for me to get on those probiotics isn't it??! I have a sticky note here to get that, as well as the keifer.  as far as the t3's go, I'm just gonna stop taking them and finish up my antibiotics.

I get tonsilitis at least once a year for the past 20 years (yes, I could have them removed, I suppose). Are you sure you have tonsilitis? Sounds like you've got more going on - I've never had a fever with tonisilitis - it's just extremely swollen and painful tonsils.

Having said that, it does take a couple of days to start feeling the effects of the penicillin. In the meantime, I use the cough drops that have numbing in them (the brand we have in Canada is called Cepacol). You can also try numbing throat sprays (altho I don't know that they're that good for you - can't remember why).. I use Chloraseptic. I find it takes the pain away at least for awhile.

Unfortunately you really just have to give it some time :( Feel better soon!

hello, the best thing tried for a bad sore throat is 3 Motrin every 4-6 hours I have took 4. It's like what the doctor would give you for pain 800mg. each Motrin has 200mg.
