Who's At Risk?

Who's At Risk?

You may be at risk for skin cancer if you have:

  • A family history of skin cancer
  • Previously developed skin cancer
  • Precancerous skin lesions: Skin lesions called actinic keratoses, which appear as rough, scaly patches on your skin, can increase your skin cancer risk.
  • Fair skin: People with less pigment in their skin are more likely to get skin cancer. Those who freckle and burn easily are at an increased risk.
  • Lots of cumulative sun exposure
  • A weakened immune system: Including HIV/AIDS, HPV, or if you are taking immunosuppressant drugs after an organ transplant
  • Been sunburned many times, or have had severe sunburns
  • Moles: Skin cancer is likely to form on moles
  • Been exposed to toxic materials like arsenic
  • Vacationed or live in an area at high elevation: UV radiation is more intense at high elevations because it isn't as scattered by the atmosphere.
