Despite being repeatedly touted as a natural way to prevent or cure a cold, Echinacea's effectiveness has not been solidly backed by scientific research. In 2006, the Cochrane Collaboration, an international organization that evaluates medical research, found no evidence that Echinacea can prevent a cold. And only 9 of the 16 trials studied showed some benefit when the herb was used to treat cold symptoms.
