2 concerned momma's

Sooo My wife and I are battling doctor's for help with our 6 yr old she has experienced some trama and has other issues mainly with adhd!! the doctor we are currently seeing had her on impusivity pills (risperdal) which just made her worse , she started school about a week and half ago since then there have been several behavioral issues with her she even went as far as to yell at the teacher. We both know that the impulsivity pills just made it worse and made her have more mood swing's, ( the teacher also agrees with us on this) we seen her doctor yesterday and now he prescribed zoloft for her 25 mg half a pill every morning , My wife and I feel like she should totally be on something that target's the adhd !!! she is a very smart little girl but she just need's the right med's to regulate her .. We feel like we are not getting anywhere with the med's he is prescribing if anything it's makin her worse!!
ARE WE WRONG???

I do not think that risperal is for ADHD. Has she been to a child development specialist or psychologist and does she have a diagnosis?  if she has a diagnosis, the first line of meds that these specialists usually try is a stimulant such as Ritalin or Metadate CD.  Get another doctor (specialist) and get her formally eveluated.  If she does ADHD, ask for a stimulant such as long acting Ritalin.  You also need to make sure that she has a cleas diet with no sugar, no artificial sweetner, no artificial color, no preservatives and cooked from fressh ingredients.  Make sure that she gets lots and lots of sleep. Make sure that she gets lot of exercise and sunshine.  Supplement her diest with vitamins and Omega 3 (fish oil). Good luck

Finding the right meds can be hard I must have tried 25 before I found one that works. I think that finding a treatment targeted at ADHD will help. You can also try other things, it really depends on how bad it is and how the person reacts to the meds.

While I do not have either one of my daughters (ages almost 10 and 6) on any medication as of yet, (the oldest being diagnosed as ADD, suspect the younger is ADHD) I am not concerned with the stimulants as much as I would be with the antidepressant.  I do not know much about stimulants, (I just started Adderall myself for recently diagnosed ADD) but as someone who started antidepressants at age 16, the fact your daughter was put on an antidepressant so young concerns me.  Simply because many studies have shown that antidepressants interact differently with a young and not fully developed brain.  "They" have also found our brains don't fully mature until you are in your mid 20's.  Are you seeing a general practitioner?  Maybe you need a referral to a child psychiatrist who better understands the child brain/chemistry?  It took me years to find the right medications for depression.  Continue to ask questions, challenge the doctor.  If they are unresponsive or defensive, find someone else who will work WITH you instead of telling you what to do.  It is so hard to see our children suffer!  The pain almost seems to be more than you can bear.  If I can be of any help or support, please contact me.

Risperdal is a pretty heavy duty drug.  What kind of a doctor are you seeing?
