Adderall is NOT working

I was just diagnosed with ADHD today and my doctor prescribed me Adderall. I took 20 mg about 5 hours ago and I feel absolutely NOTHING.  Is it because I donated Red Blood Cells yesterday???  I am worried as to why I feel ABSOLUTELY NOTHING, I feel disappointed in this medication and it has been only 1 day.  I really need this medication to work for my ADHD.  Thank you for your time!

You are partially right.  Many people with ADHD  wind up self medicating.  The question is why?   Studies have shown that kids who were NOT treated with medication were three times more likely to become substance abusers.  One would suspect the opposite to be true if treatment with meds lead to further addictions.

It is a well proven fact that someone who really has ADHD has a completely different reaction then a person who doesn't.  They simply don't get the "buzz".  I know its hard to believe when you have experienced the high that others don't get it.  But its true.  And yes, to a normal person - adderall is highly addictive.  Thanks for your comments.  I really hope your depression is getting better.

Hi There

I'm a recovered alcoholic/addict who was prescribed Adderral for depression and the associated fatigue. I do experience a high if I take too much, which is so hard not to do my doctor needs to mail them to me daily. We tried it as a last resort for my depression and it is used off-label for this purpose in treatment resistant cases.

I've got big doubts that you can't get high from these meds if you have ADD/ADHD.Many foks with ADD/ADHD develop addictions to alcohol and cocaine, meth, which we know is very similar to Adderrall, so a person with ADD/ADHD who also is addictive would indeed get a high the same as any stimulant. Believe me, it works wonders for the depression,  when I coudn't get off my sofa for 9 months.... how I wish it was safer for people in recovery. Unfortunately,I knew differently when the "buzz" hit. There is also evidence that using addictive substances can cause the brain to relapse back to wanting the original abused substance -- ie. keeps the "addiction mechanism" alive in the brain,as does nicotine, they know now too.

Good Doctors start at the lowest level to avoid an overdose.  A lot depends on body weight and severity.  Give it a day or two, and then give him a call.
The fact that you are not higher than a kite is a good indication that you have ADHD.  If you were "normal", I guarantee that you would have felt something.

Maybe too soon to have an effect. But, more important, is your doctor a general practitioner, a psychiatrist, or what? You should know that Adderall if closely related to the meth sold on the street. It is therefore a dangerous drug and habit forming. I would rather have ADD.
