You may try getting a hold of a childrens counselor and ask them to help you explain it to him better. Or there are lots of books out there too, that can help you cope and help your 5 year old cope with having ADD. Its become so common these days, I wonder what the government is putting in our water? I am not one of those crazy people that think the government is out to get us, but if you honestly look at how many more children in schools these days are having a hard time staying on task its amazing. More and more children are being "properly" diagnosed with ADD/ADHD, and having to take medications to keep up and stay on task. I sometimes wonder though if it isnt the fact that they have raised the standards in the curriculums in schools so much since we were all children, maybe that is what is causing our children to lose focus. They are having to learn more information faster and not in any normal order like we did.
Anyways... that was way off topic, but you might want to check out some books about it. I know there are great ones out there how to talk to a child about ADD and ADHD. Good luck!!

My son is 11 and just started meds for ADD.  He has a very hard time to except that this helps him stay on task, but thinks he is  like his dad, which he has seen do nothing with his life or not be a dad to begin with.  So yes the low self esteam is there for him as well.  I had explained to him that there is nothing wrong with him. He is highly intellegent and just needs the help until this part of his brain catchs up with the rest of his brain.  Nothing wrong, the best analgy I used was say if I need glasses to read.... I have nothing wrong with me I just use the tool of glasses to help me see better. Same as the Meds.  as tool to help me focus better. this way to peform to my highest ability i can.  hope that helps

My son was 5 when he got on medication for ADHD.  He already had a low self image because he was always in trouble.  He was actually relieved when he found out there was something that would help him control himself.  He still (now age 11) has to fight the feeling that there is something wrong with him.  We both agree that life with meds is much better than life without them.  Good luck and God bless.
