7 months pregnant and addicted to pain killers

My daughter is 7 months pregnant and addicted to vicodin. From what i am told she is taking up to 12 a day. She also is taking didaudid and using patches. I don't know what to do for her. She tells me if she stops it could harm the baby because the withdrawals will be so bad. I am looking into a methadone clinic right now to see if they could possible help her. Is there anyone out there that has any idea's on what i should do? I am new to this, this is my first post. Have a great day....tina

Thank you so much becca for looking that up. I will definately check it out before i do anything. I just want everything to be ok. It is killing me to watch what she is doing to herself and her baby. She just moved out so i will not be there to see if she is doing ok, everyday. I dont know what i will do if they take that baby. Thank you both so much..Tina

everyone has given you great advice...So i won't go there, because it would be the same i would of said..
But i will tell you As a mother myslef i can't imagine what you are going through...She is very lucky to have you, and i know you can't understand addiction, so stay here and we can help you.

you will need as much help as she will...I am a mother and have 4 kids..I am an addict, although i am clean almost 4 months...Never did i ever think i would ever have become addicted...Now i was lucky that i was never addicted while pregnant, thank god...But do know that this is a disease, and so so hard to beat...But it is very possible with the right tools, support , etc...And her having you is one of the best kind of support in the world...there is nothing like a mothers love..
I know this is hard for you...There are a few here in the same situation as you, i hope they can help u..
addiction hurts so many
god bless and good luck

The drug is Suboxone. It has not been tested on women who are pregnant....please make sure you check this out before jumping into it.

yes avis, she is asking for help. The methadone clinic i contacted said they have a new drug for pain pill addiction. I think it is called cyboxin? I have not looked into this yet. I really don't want to go that route either. tina

I am sad to say that my daughter does not have a OB/GYN. She went to the emergency room for dehydration and a virus and they did blood work and that is how she found out she was pregnant. She was diagnosed with sciatica when she was 16 and was given vicodin 7.5. She has never stopped taking them since. She buys her pills off the streets because all of the hospitals have red flagged her charts. She wants to stop, and has told me that she can't it is too painful. She cries everyday about it. She has not had any prenatal care at all. I am so scared. I already have custody  1st son because she was all messed up on dilaudid when he was 6 months old and could not take care of him. I will look into a clinic 1st thing monday morning. I just hope she goes. Thank you so much for listening and understanding...Tina

She need to tell the DOCTOR .....If she comes clean they can help her with a taper plan or getting help for her addiction ....If she does not do this and the baby is born addicted dds will step in .I would not recommend methadone that is like going from the frying pan into the fire ...It is very hard too get off of once you get on. Does your daughter want help?

First off she needs to come clean with her OB/GYN. If she does this then the 3 of you (if she is willing to have your help) can formulate a plan. What is going to happen if she doesn't tell the doc is the baby will be born addicted and will go through withdrawals. The hospital will do something about this-like let child protective services know. I think a safe bet is to talk to her doctor first. IF she has no doctor then find her a clinic ASAP so she can work on her options. You don't want your grandchild born addicted to drugs. It's hard to stomach. You are a good mother for helping her and not judging. She needs your support. One thing, don't buy into the 'I can't quit it will hurt the baby' . That is the addict in her talking. She needs to want to quit otherwise it won't matter what you do.
Good luck and keep posting.

Methadone has been considered "safe" to take during pregnancy, but i think what avis said is right, methadone is the hardest drug to get off, unbearably hard, so make sure she is totally aware of this before taking it...unless she can do a taper plan to get off the vikes and off the dones? i am not sure they do that in a clinic setting though, dont know...
she should get an obgyn, and ask the obgyn to help her with a taper plan, i am not sure about the baby NOT being addicted to methadone either...check into this also.

no suboxone will not be giving to her it is very harmful on the baby. But methadone usually is ok to take and baby will not have any wd most of time. Clinic will make her life more stable at least

Thank you so much for all the kind words and support you, and all have given me. I feel so relieved to have found this site. I originally was goin on for my own problems. I just happened to stumble upon the addiction forum. I am so glad i did. Nobody understands what i am going through. Now i am tearing up r2r. Would it be a bad thing if i said i need a xanax? LOL. You all are so wonderful. I am going to get the ball rolling for my baby girl this week and i will keep you all posted on what is happening. Lotsa love...Tina
