Attempting to cut back or go cold turkey from opioids without proper help can be deadly!
I've had hives so badly I ended up in the Intensive Care Unit for two days.
I can tell you that when my hives began..... Benadryl helped a little.... but applying LOTS of Calamine lotion helped a lot better. Worse thing you should do when hives appear is take a hot bath or hot shower.

You are an addict, that's what's wrong with you :-)
Glad you told your wife. Having support makes quitting SO much easier. Call doctor tomorrow and come clean with him. Keeping you alive is of the utmost importance!!
Good luck and keep us posted.

I finally told my wife that my pills have become habit forming and about the hives.  She is actually really understanding and supportive.  I am calling my doc tomorrow morning (monday) since his office was closed today.  I still took 6 pills today.  I am so bad.  What is wrong with me.

i had a perscription for vicodin years ago from a denist. i itched like crazy and broke out in hives. you're allergic and there's nothing to make it go away. hydrocodone a few years later didn't make me break out. maybe your doctor could try something else? in the meantime you should try to come up with a plan for quitting. at least, try to only take a small amount. definately call your doc and explain the situation.

hun, alot of people have gotten thru w/d's.. you can too.

another option is to do a quick taper.  i would suggest doing QUICK because of your allergic reaction to them (obviously, taking none is better..) but i know for some, that is a very hard thing to do - going c/t.

people here have done BOTH, you can too.  you'll be so so glad you got off of them.. for so many reasons.  i have back issues too, but once i got off of them, i realized the opiates had quit working anyway.  they are only meant to take short-term.  unfortunately, many of us didn't do that (nor did many of our doctors encourage it..) but their effectiveness wears off quickly and all you are left with is addiction.

you can do it...

don't worry about the insurance...worry about your health. It sucks you have to deal with this, but it has to be done. Like Avis said-go CT. The reaction will probably worsen quickly and can turn deadly.
Let us know what you doctor says after you talk to him tomorrow.
good luck

Sometimes they will call back and not charge you. Explain your situation and maybe they will help. I have to agree with avis here. Allergic reactions can suddenly get worse. Don't take that chance.

thank you.  I got hives about a week ago and have just ignored it.  Ive continued to take the pills and just hoped the hives would go away, but they are getting a little worse.  I just popped two more pills before I got on here and read the replies you people wrote.  Damn this sucks.  I tried going cold turkey about a month ago and only lasted 5 hours.  It was hell.  Thanks for talking me into calling my doc tomorrow.  The only problem is my insurance changed about a month ago and my doctor doesnt take my new insurance.  I dont know what Im going to do now.

Are you here as an addict asking why you are getting hives from hydrocodone or what? Like mshell said, if you are getting hives you are recently sensitive/allergic and need to stop now. The next allergic reaction may be your airway shutting down or something equally as deadly.

My son is allergic to codeine.  He get "hives".  Alot of people are allergic to it.

I am not a doctor, but my son't pediatrician naturally doesn't allow him to take it.  Anytime he has to go to a doctor I tell them he is allergic to codeine.  It is a very important detail.

Of course, don't take it anymore.  Is this a prescription from a doctor for some pain?  If so, tell him/her your symptoms.  He will take you off of it and give you something else for pain.  HOWEVER, if you are taking it "illegally", well, you are fortunate.  I dont think you will be wanting to take it and get addicted to it.   Hives/scratching... not fun....not worth it.  Ask the pharmacist if you can take Benadryl for the hives.  Dont take anything unless you ask a doc/pharmacist, tho.

Take care
