How Much IS alot

My husband has an addiction to percocet and moraphine- he is perscribed these two medications from a doctor. He knows he has an addiction but refuses to believe it is as bad as i think it is. Anyway he takes 2 100mg of moraphine a day is this alot? And then when he gets his perscriptions they are for 30 days at a time- he immediately takes all the percocet (120 of them) with in 4 to 5 days at the most, in addition to the moraphine which he takes sort of how he is supposed to. I just want to know if any one out there could tell me how severe this is or if this is alot. He previously was taking percocet and oxycodone, but now it has been switched- he has been sick when he runs out and the withdraws are horrible- i just at my wits end- i hope someone can help and explain if the mgs he takes are alot.
thanks

The worst thing about taking all the percs fast is the tylenol and the liver toxicity. The amounts are high but not that high for an addict. all the best

If he has tried to quit several times and can not...suboxone may be an option for him...if he wants to quit...he has to want it...there is alot of info on it in the health pages to the right under DISCUSSION...and several website about it as well

Taking a month supply of Percocet in 5 days is no joke.  Sounds like he is already very addicted and I would try to get him help.  Chasing pills gets old fast.

Good luck.

If your husband is buying them off the street and doctor shopping my heart goes out to you. There really isn't much you or anyone else can do for him if he doesn't want to stop himself. It pains me to read a post like yours because I don't have any wise words of wisdom. Most people on this forum are here because they want to quit and people like that try to do what it takes. Would your husband be willing to read some posts on this forum? There is something called PAWS--- that I would print out and ask him to read, maybe that would help.

He has been taking the perscriptions various ones for 3 years- from a back surgury. I didn't know it was a problem until about a year ago. He was buying them on the street and doctor shopping then, now I am not sure if he is still buying them off the street- i tend to think so since he downs the percs fast then seems fine with out them and just on the 2 moraphine pills a day. He just tells me i am being to obsesive about the perocet and i shouldn't since he isn't getting sick because he takes the moraphine the right way- which i think is bs- i know its all wrong- i just don't know if there is any hope for him- i have seen him withdraw way to many times and it is the most gut wrenching thing to watch- i just don't think he will ever stop

120 percs in 5 days (i.e. 24 a day) is a lot.  if he's already having horrible w/d when he's out, it's almost certain that the amount/day will increase.  everyone develops tolerance - i used to be feeling GREAT on 4 or 5 tabs a day, but by the end it took 35 to 40 just to keep me out of w/d.

addiction always gets worse - that's just what it does. it is a relentlessly progressive, ultimately fatal, disease.  it's not surprising that he can't see how bad it is -- that's just part of the deal.  i carry a picture in my wallet that shows me looking like death. i was amazed when i found it about a year into Recovery, because i knew exactly when it was taken, which was long before the time when i thought things got bad.

There is no doubt that the percocets are going down way too fast - that is a problem. 200mg of morphine is also a lot - those doses start at 15mg and goto 30, 60, and 100mg. And I agree that morphine w/d's are terrrible. And you pick up a morphine jones really fast. It doesnt take long for the abstinence syndrome to come into play. Of course the opiate overload at the beginning doesnt help any. See if hubby will go two or three days without any pills - if he isnt cheating you will have your answer. Be sure to keep him hydrated - morph w/d's are terrible with vomiting and stomach problems - you lose fluids fast and dont replace them ........most Doc's would hesitate this dosing with a terminal patient - what is your husband taking them for?
