How long can methadone withdrawal go on?

I have been on Methadone for the last 6 years, all starting with 5mg dose all the way up to 120mg per day. I was put on methadone to get me off of percocet that had been perscribed to treat my Migraine headaches. Finally I had enouugh of the Methadone and asked to be taken off of it. I had already tapered myself down to about 60-80mg perday, then went cold, on the third day I hurt so bad I finally went to the hospital and they treated me with Suboxone for 3 days. Starting with 4mg per day and I started feeling better almost immediately so I asked if we could taper the Suboxone. The one thing that really confused me was that even though i had not taken any methadone for 6 days by the time i got out of the hospital I was still coming up positive for methadone in my urine. Now i have been home for 6 days and the withdrawal symptoms have come back hard and I am really suffering. What advice do you have?

I have been on methadone at 100 mg for 2 years, what got me to the methadone is a little of everyone's story, abused opiates, did whatever it took to get me through the day! However, let me tell u now, I have an alleged neurological disorder by the way of a 12gauge shotgun through the body, one of the worst spots being my foot! Multiple shots taken, but oddly, foot was the worst.

Anyway, what I'm getting at is this. I was so tired at being a slave to a drug, and with a baby on the way, decided I was done! I have tried to do the maintanece wein, but always suffered.

This time I just quit at 100 mg. it's been 13 days  and while its not been easy, I took milk thistle/siliverin, an herbal supplement that helps the liver to detox faster, and melatonin and l-theanine to help with restless legs and mood swings.

Even with this, I still suffered, but I'm here on day 13 and feel a world better, suffering from knee pain, which could be from restless legs, or the way I've walked these past couple years, but being worn out all the time is the worst.  I know I have a ways to go, but the reason I am appealing to u, is if u have been a while without actually facing the pain of your illness, and I know I may just be a lucky case, but I walk better off methadone than I did on it for the pain. As a matter of fact, I also suffered from daily persistent chronic migraines, in other words, I had a migraine daily when I started methadone. Now, aside from the headaches that come with withdrawals, I am fine. I feel better off of everything then I did taking it. There is hope. You know your body, you know what you can endure.  Just remember to take it 1 step at a time, set small goals, even if its just a 30 minute nap, or watching a tv show. It makes time pass much much faster.

I have a question regarding methadone. I personally have a rare neurological disorder and all that can be done is to treat the symptoms. I take a total of 40 mgs of methadone a day and have stayed on that dose for over 4 years. I'm actually prescribed 60 mgs daily in case I would need the extra 20 mgs.
My concern is if I wanted to stop taking this medicine, how bad would I go through withdrawals.
Also I'm not 100% certain I should stop due to the pain I have from my neurological disorder. It's the reason I started taking the medicine and haven't had to up my dosage over the past 4 years. However, how bad is this medicine for the overall health of my body, that is my big concern.
Given my neurological disorder that I all ready have I don't want to further hurt my body by taking this medicine for the rest of my life.

Should I be concerned? Should I try to stop taking the medicine and live with my pain or is it okay to take as long as I never take more than prescribed?

Thanks for any help.

I gave birth to my baby on 27/9/11 on 70mg after reducing from 120 but she suffered hard for 3 weeks and they had to give her morphine I have never felt so ashamed and guilty from taking methadone or any drug until that moment. I have since reduced slowly and am down to 25 my husband was really hard on me he is very straight and doesn't understand withdrawal. He believes I should suffer like our baby maybe hes right but both my kids need me I have to do this right.
